ABOUT ME
I am a student at the University of Toronto, downtown campus. I live in Scarborough and commute to school daily. I study a smorgasboard of topics in school which include, but are not limited to: philosophy, philosophy of science, physics, english, physical anthropology, evolutionary biology, sociology, psychology. Next year i will be streamlining into Psychology. I work out on campus, since we have awesome fascilities.
There is some method to my academic course selection madness. I am interested in the public understanding (or rather misunderstanding) of science. Most of my courses are geared towards that.
When it comes to reading fiction i have read many of the classics, like the greek epics, the bible stories, paradise lost, robinson crusoe, and so on. In the fantasy and sci-fi like Lord of the Rings, Song of Ice and Fire, War of the Worlds, The Hobbit, Harry Potter, and special mention goes to Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy which will always have a special place in my heart. I do not read too much modern fiction but a good Dan-Brown type novel like Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code are enjoyable when i do read them.
What i read most is non-fiction, including science journals, popular science, and social commentary.
I am an avid PC gamer(key word avid, not obsessive), but i do not play much at the moment as i am busy with school, gym time, and friends. I have been raised in and by the internet, computers, and video games, to some degree. Some of the first games i played included text based Intercom games like Zork, then side-scroller Apogee games like Commander Keen. I love RTS games; my first one was Command and Conquer and then went on to Red Alert, Starcraft, Wacraft, and so on. I also have an affinity for MMO games like Dark Age of Camelot and World of Warcraft.
I am a rational, scientifically minded person. The universe is an awesome, wonderful, grand thing to study and appreciate.
"The universe is not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose" - J.B.S. Holdain
"Science does violence to common sense" - Richard Dawkins
"How is it that hardly any major religion has looked at science and concluded, 'This is better than we thought! The Universe is much bigger than our prophets said, grander, more subtle, more elegant?" Instead they say, 'No, no, no! My god is a little god, and I want him to stay that way." A religion, old or new, that stressed the magnificence of the Universe as revealed by modern science might be able to draw forth reserves of reverence and awe hardly tapped by the conventional faiths." - Carl Sagan
"Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence" - Carl Sagan
"What can be claimed without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence" - Christopher Hitchens
"We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Arabia. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively exceeds the set of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here." - Richard Dawkins
"There are more things in heaven and earth...
Than are dreamt of in your philosophy" - Hamlet (Shakespeare)
"Brevity is the soul of wit" - Hamlet (Shakespeare)
"Dazzling and tremendous how quick the sunrise would kill me, could I not now and always send sunrise out of me" Walt Whitman
"The only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others. His own good, either physical or moral, is not a sufficient warrant." - John Stuart Mill, 1806-73
"Carpe Diem" (Sieze the Day!) - Horace
"You can not reason people out of positions they did not reason themselevs into" - Michael Shermer
"Who is more foolish, the child afraid of the dark or the man afraid of the light? - Maurice Freehill
"Don't Panic!" - Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
"Man has been here 32,000 years. That it took a hundred million years to prepare the world for him is proof that that is what it was done for. I suppose it is. I dunno. If the Eiffel tower were now representing the world's age, the skin of paint on the pinnacle-knob at its summit would represent man's share of that age; & anybody would perceive that that skin was what the tower was built for. I reckon they would. I dunno.
Mark Twain - "Was the World Made for Man?"
"Now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies." - Voltaire (on his deathbed when asked to renounce Satan for his final sacrament by a priest)
"I was wondering why a frizebee appears larger the closer it gets....and then it hit me." Francis Collins.
"Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people." -- Eleanor Roosevelt
"...from the war of nature, from famine and death, the most exalted object which we are capable of conceiving, namely, the production of the higher animals, directly follows. There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved." Charles Darwin
"Once you can accept the universe as matter expanding into nothing that is something, wearing stripes with plaid comes easy." --Albert Einstein
GUYS I'M LOOKING TO MEET
As to what i look for in a guy (in both friends and especially boyfriends): generally in shape at least, not a couch potato. Much more importantly however - i like minds that are as sharp as diamonds; nothing is more endearing than a scrupulous, incredulous, critical, intelligent, opinionated mind. If you are just looking to chat and make friends though, don't feel like you always need to say something deep, small talk is good too, just not all the time.
Nothing is more useless on sites like these than people messaging me with two word emails like "what's up?", or "ur hot", "wanna cam?". If you can't communicate at least a little beyond that level, or if all you know how to talk about is what a celebrity wore last night, we probably won't have anything to talk about.
That said, there are a lot of great guys on here. I look forward to meeting you..:)
I posted this on the forum which sums up my views on what i look for in a guy:
"Someone with a mind as sharp as a diamond, who has an opinion and is not afraid to say what it is. Someone who is open minded, but not so open minded that their brain falls out, who is willing to change their mind and knows what evidence would be neccesary to do so. Someone who is confident in what he knows, someone who is educated and knows quite a lot, but who is also aware of the scope of his own ignorance.
Someone who enjoys a physical workout, and does it not just to please others, but out of a sense of self-worth. Someone who cares about their body but is not so fragile than they wont play sports, play rough, or take a risk every now and then.
Someone with whom i could curl up on the couch in a warm blanket in front of the fireplace while sipping hot cocoa or cider while getting lost in a romance of ideas before we get lost in each other."
