ABOUT ME

I'm easy-going by nature, but passionate about the things that interest and excite me: music, science, history, politics, books, family and friends.

I know how to laugh, especially at myself (comedy begins at home), and I'm pretty good at making other people laugh as well (irony loves company).

I'm hardly a jock---I don't play sports and I don't watch sports on TV (except if I happen to catch swimming or diving). I do like to keep fit, though, and I like outdoor activities.

I love life and am at my best when I'm around people who feel the same way.

You can get a sense of my personality by reading some of my posts.

**********
I taught college-level music history for about fourteen years. Now I'm an administrator at a school of science and engineering.

**********
Have a thought for Alex the Parrot, who contributed to science for thirty years (with a healthy rebellious spirit) and changed the way we think about the minds of animals.

**********
Some favorites (for conversation's sake):

HOBBIES: fitness, swimming, astronomy (<3 my telescope), travel, hiking, canoeing, inner tubing/whitewater rafting, sailing (photo of me climbing an 85-ft schooner mast, above), tropical fish (photo of my half-moon betta, now swimming in the big rice paddy in the sky, above), plants, lego; I'd love to learn scuba

BOOKS: John Adams, As I Lay Dying, Tristan, Moby Dick, Mrs Dalloway, Galileo's Daughter, The Classical Style, The Envy of Angels, Courtly Culture, The Book of Memory, Gothic Art: Glorious Visions, Rhythmic Gesture in Mozart, On Photography, The Printing Revolution in Early Modern Europe; I read all the time, ask me what I'm reading now.

MUSIC: Mozart, Brahms, Bach, Josquin; Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Shirley Horn; Jefferson Airplane, The Mamas and the Papas, Dave Matthews Band, U-2, Lenny Kravitz, Jimi Hendrix; Indian classical music

MOVIES: Auntie Mame, Casablanca, A Man For All Seasons, The Birds, Now Voyager, Desk Set, Adam's Rib, Roman Holiday, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, What's Up Doc?, Out of Africa, Latter Days, Amadeus, Kundun, Water

**********
Places I've visited (basically the Carolingian Empire)

I lived in Germany for a while in college and traveled as much as I could. (Notice the white dots for Andorra, Liechtenstein, San Marino, and Monaco...maybe next time).

States (many for professional meetings); I lived on the South Side of Chicago for twelve years and would have been happy to spend the rest of my life there. Amazing city.

Ditto what 4 of 7 said. There are too many things to talk about. I guess we'll have to get together more often.

MikeOnMain is such a good guy that I look forward to the next time we meet so I can ask him a million questions about music that I didn't get chance to while talking about everything else while going down the river. 4 of 7
