ABOUT ME

I am just your everyday, semi-normal, slightly weird, witty, masculine, yet sensitive guy. I am active in my community and very athletic minded. My gym habits include spending at least 3 days a week doing circuit weight training and at least 2 more doing some type of low and or high-intensity cardio workout. This summer ('09) I want to do my first Triathlon.

I have a early 00's Trek, in Lance Armstrong yellow! Part of this plan includes training a bit with the Chicago Razors, a local all-inclusive triathlete team.

Update-I am forcing myself to swim three days a week at the pool doing laps. It is going very well. I may not be the fastest swimmer, but I am learning to not require CPR after every lap.

I have been coaching rowing since 2003 when I was just out of college, where I was a strongly competitive coxswain. Until the last couple years, coaching was an entirely volunteer gig. I was coaching small university teams. In 2007 I became head coach of a Chicago area masters team and have started to make it a profession. Masters rowing is pretty much open to any age group but not specific to a college team. I also coach a varsity squad at a University.

Over the last two years the Masters team has won many medals at various competitions thru-out the Midwest and east coast and competed at the annual Head of the Charles regatta in Boston, MA. In 2008 the men's Club 8 became one of the fastest club 8s to compete at the event. The only crews faster then them were crews composed entirely of college age kids. (Which I think is cheating as they have their OWN event) The entire team is a joy to coach and growing very fast. In the next few years I can see there being a lot of successes in the lightweight and heavyweight categories and the club 8+ and 4+. The “+” denotes the little person in the back that is called a Coxswain. (Its pronounced “cocks”- “sin”)

I enjoy the sport of rowing. I find it to be a true team sport. My approach to coaching is to focus on the entire boat of rowers as a whole, and not just one ONE star athlete. It takes an organized effort from everyone to make the boat fast, not just a few good rowers and six more dead-weights. I like to bring out the inner-athlete in each rower. I LOATHE pretenders though and rowing is a sport where you can tell who works hard and who is just there to play around and prance around in spandex.

Last year I also became head coach for one of the nation’s few GLBT rowing teams. As a relatively new program, they are going thru some growing pains but in just one year they went from consistently coming in last place to becoming competitive with other programs of similar size and age-range. They have worked really hard and coaching GLBT rowers has been an interesting experience to say the least. It is not without it's challenges though! 2009 might be the year GBLT rowing starts winning some races!
