A sponsored triathlete and triathalon coach, Daniel Smith (RealJock username: triboy86), 37, began training just six years ago, but he’s already qualifying for Nationals with a shot at Team USA.
What is your fitness level?
Fit and healthy.
How do you stay fit?
I am a sponsored triathlete. I coach triathlon and running groups.
Do you play a sport? If yes, what and how long have you played?
I’ve been a triathlete for six years.
What's the highest level of sports that you've achieved? Are you out in your sport?
I qualified for Nationals this summer. I may have a chance to make the world championship team USA. I’m out as much as needed.
What's the highest level of sports that you've achieved? Are you out in your sport? What is your favorite muscle group to train? Why? What is your least favorite muscle group to train? Why?
My favorite muscle group is my core. It keeps me tight and strong. My least favorite is my calves as too much cycling leaves them too tired to do more.
What celebrity / pro athlete do you most resemble?
I was mistaken last summer for the blonde soccer player from United Kingdom, David Beckham.
What sports and fitness goals have you achieved? What do you still want to accomplish? Why?
I’m trying to make the world team (long shot) since I started this sport after losing my job in New York City in the 9/11 mess. Since then, I have quit all my bad habits and have retrained my body. I try to lead a healthy and honest life as a good example for others to see.
What inspires you to train? Who inspires you?
Being the best that I can be. Being an example for my younger students and nephews.
What's your favorite body part? Why? What's your least favorite body part? Why?
I like my legs and butt. They’re nice and tight. I could do without the few grey hairs I’ve found lately.
What impact has sports and fitness had on your life?
Huge. I have stopped smoking, drinking and any extracurricular bad habits. In the past six years, I’ve become very grounded and humbled.
Have you experienced homophobia in your sport or in pursuit of fitness? Please describe.
A little, but not as much as in high school. I think wearing speedos and running in public places, you have to be semi-comfortable in your sexuality, so this sport is OK with me.
What three words best capture your essence?
Spirited. Honest. Fun.
What do you do in terms of diet, vitamins, nutrition and supplements to maintain your health?
I’m on a number of vitamin supplements and protein powders, too. I try to eat every 3-4 hours and balanced healthy food choices.
What's your best health and fitness secret?
Eat very clean food and often.
