Gay powerlifter sets record

Illinois native John Hudson isn’t the limp-wristed pansy of anti-gay stereotypes.
An English lecturer working on his doctorate at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Hudson, 40, is all brains and brawn. He set a world record in the deadlift for the master’s division, ages 40-46, in Minneapolis on May 27 with a lift of 701.9 pounds, according to OutSports.
Additionally, Hudson, who started lifting at 14 years old, won the bench press and set an Illinois state record with a 677.7 pound press, according to OutSports.
"I've had very few negative experiences in the sport in connection to being out," Hudson told OutSports. "As a whole, regardless of their socio-political leanings, powerlifters tend to judge other lifters based on their effort, accomplishments, and their contributions to the sport.”
