Billboard chart-topping singer Kevin Aviance, 38, suffered a broken jaw and other injuries in what police are calling a hate crime attack.
Though his jaw is wired shut now, Aviance hopes to be able to perform at New York’s Gay Pride event at the end of June, his publicist Len Evans told the Associated Press. "He's going to try to get his strength back so that he can perform,” he said.
Police arrested four men ages 16 to 20 on hate-crime charges in the attack, the AP reported.
Aviance, who performs in drag, was dressed as a boy when he was attacked by six or seven youths in Manhattan’s East Village as people passed by, but did not stop to help, Evans told the AP.
Aviance’s hits include “Alive” (no. 1 on Billboard’s dance charts in 2002), “Give It Up” (2004) and “Din Da Da” (Billboard no. 1 in 1997).
