Cardinal Francis George of Chicago denied allegations by the Rainbow Sash Movement that the archdiocese or the Cardinal in any way support the Gay Games.
Catholics and conservatives were flummoxed by a Rainbow Sash press release that congratulated the archdiocese and the Cardinal for their support of the Gay Games.
"In a stunning gesture of good faith the Archdiocese of Chicago seems to be rethinking its relationship with the Gay and Lesbian community," the press release said.
The Rainbow Sash movement is a group of LGBT Catholics who persist in their Catholicism, despite the church's denunciation of homosexuality. They wear a rainbow sash to advertise this.
"The press release issued by the Rainbow Sash Movement is misleading and an exercise in manipulation of facts and of people," the Cardinal told LifeSite.
"I was never informed by AGLO about a request to publicize the roundtable. Neither the Human Rights Campaign Fund nor the Rainbow Sash Movement consulted me about AGLO’s involvement with this event or my attitude toward it," the Cardinal said.
