JoeTraining Series: Make friends and calves

By RealJock Staff

RealJock proudly presents this four-month series of weekly training clinics with Steve Lischin of Joe Training. Joe Training represents some of New York City’s most sought-after and respected personal trainers, including Lischin, a former competitive bodybuilder whose celebrity and professional athlete clientele come to him to build the strong, healthy, and beautiful bodies they need for their careers. Each week, Lischin gives us detailed description of one of the seminal exercises from his workout plans. You can browse through these exercises to learn proper form and technique, then incorporate them into your own workout routine. Be sure to keep your eye out for interesting variations on exercises you haven’t seen before, and learn about the pitfalls you need to avoid to prevent painful injury.

Donkey calf raises are so old school, "the old timers like Arnold Shwarzenegger used to do these," NYC superstar trainer Steve Lischin said.

Unlike the Terminator, Lischin doesn't think machines should replace people, that's why he's such a big fan of donkey calf raises using genuine human weights.

"I like doing older exercises that people think are obsolete because machines mimic these movements now," he said. "The real thing is still more effective."

Plus it's a great way to make new friends and get attention at the gym.

"These are a great icebreaker at the gym," Lischin said."'hey, can you sit on my back for these?'"

"Do it without weight first to get the motion correct, then go make some new friends," Lischin said. "It's not that important how big your new friend is, it's more important to do the motion correctly."

1. Place yourself on a block, bend at the waist, hold onto a table or something stable.

2. Have someone (or two) sit on your low back and raise yourself up and down.

To get all around calf definition, try the exercise with straight legs and with your knees slightly bent.
