Wilton said"The [U.S. Fish and Wildlife] department says one area where sand is being dredged is a sensitive section of the Chandeleur Islands, and the state failed to meet an extended deadline to install pipe that would draw sand from a less-endangered area."
That's taken from the linked article, and suggests there are 2 sides to this story. Building sand berms may be a good idea, but what if it causes its own environmental problems?
1) The parish obtained the permit from the Feds first. The permit authorized the area where dredging could occur.
2) The oil is already there (thanks to the Feds stalling on the parish applications for the past 2 months), therefore, this "environmentally sensitive area" has already been compromised by the oil. In other words, the Feds have no idea that the area they are wanting to protect is already polluted, thanks to the paralysis of the Feds.
Instead of stating that the "Federal government has dragged its feet, obstructed and stalled" as southbeach has, always presenting a biased interpretation of events, would it be more accurate to say that Louisiana has dragged its own feet? Why did the State fail "to meet the extended deadline to draw sand from a less-endangered area"? We need more background information than what's being selectively presented to us.
Every weekday, since day 1 of this disaster, I have tuned in to John "Spud" McConnell on WWL-AM in New Orleans, no matter where in the country I happened to be and I've seen (heard) this story from the source... the parish Presidents speaking on the program, the fishermen and state of Louisiana officials. From day 1, they have known that the sand berms needed to be built, and they (mistakenly) assumed that the Federal government had learned from Katrina and that following all the Federal guidelines and procedures would work this time to allow them to expedite their defensive response. As you and everyone else knows, the Feds are 2 months behind on this, and by continuing to obstruct, they are doing nothing but make a bad situation even worse.
Read SB's posts and links carefully, guys -- they are loaded with distortions, half-truths, misrepresentations, and anti-Obama propaganda. As most of us here already know, he posts not to inform & enlighten us, but to win adherents to his extreme right-wing political views. These are not objective comments, but commercials. Let the buyer beware.
