I'm curious to know. Think about it.

How many people do you meet up with often yet only know their first name? Or how many friends in the past can you not remember their last names?

I think not knowing a real friend's name is kind of weird. Even RJ members who I know well, started with their names. Facebook helps (lol), but how well do you know them if you don't even know their name?

My last roommate, even after six months living with me, couldn't remember my last name when he wrote out his rent check. icon_rolleyes.gif

We know the last names of all our friends, their addresses, phone numbers and email, the names of their partners, etc, and have visited their homes, and they ours. Perhaps you mean to say ACQUAINTANCES, which is not the same thing as friends. And yes, there are some casual acquaintances that we only know by their first name.

That would include a few RJ members we've met in person, who didn't provide their last names. That's OK, I'm not sure we gave ours, either, now that I think about it. Which reminds me to email them with that info, if they wanna send us a holiday card, and vice versa. Talk about begging for a little gift from Hallmark... LOL!

I have a strange feeling that only the people who claim they know all of their friends' last names will be the ones jumping in to say so. Most people will be afraid to admit it.

I’ll admit it…I’m horrible with names. In the service I didn’t know anyone’s first name.
I recently had to call a friend to get permission to use her as a reference; thought I was being cool by asking her how she spelled her last name…LOL “Smith”.

You know what, I think many of us have this feeling that asking a person for their last name is a little intrusive, and so we avoid it. Eventually they may become friends, and you still haven't asked. So then it becomes odd to ask because it seems like you should have known it. Or you pick it up when you are out together, like when they sign something in front of you, etc.

Yes, I know their last names.
It comes in handy when I send out christmas cards.

I get this over with very easily.

"Excuse me, Friend. What's your last name?"

    "Um why?"

"It's for my cell phone so I know who I'm talking to."

    "Right. It's A."

And.... DONE. icon_smile.gif If I know them more than a week or see them a few times, I have their last name.

I know all my friends last names, but my partner used to set up his address book by first names (He was a bigger, or at least busier, slut than I was). It worked for him.

If you don't know their last name, they are not your friend. They are at best your acquaintance.

My friends and I call ea other by our last names. I would question the level of friendship if I didn't know the last name. Categorized more as an acquaintance.

    Last names?
I'd be lucky to get their first names before they leave the house!

I'd agree that if you don't know their last name, you probably aren't really their "friend." That said, this is the age of facebook! I see everyone's last name flashed on my computer screen on a daily basis, so by now I know all of my friends', and most of my acquaintances', last names...

I actually stopped hanging out with a guy that I'd known for 5 years because he wouldn't tell me his last name when I asked.
