I posted an account of my Half Dome hike back in 2007 on RJ way back when. I still consider it one of my best personal achievements...right up there with some of my best running/racing achievements.

The National Park Service now requires Half Dome hikers to obtain permits for certain periods. They also have put together a really good (9 minute or so) video on the hike. It's really well done.

    Wow, congratulations, buddy!

Allow me to celebrate with you that accomplishment.

I think I'd enjoy climbing that mountain someday (but in the summertime!).

Thank you, but maybe I overstated my accomplishment a bit (although it is indeed a big personal accomplishemnt). Many people do it. It's not easy, but if you are in good cardiovascular shape, and also have upper body strength (those cables require upper body pull strength...you pull yourself up as much as you use your legs), you'll have no problem.

You can't do it in the winter even if you wanted to. They remove the cables in October. They are just installing the cables for the warm season this week.

Oh, by the way, the video says the hike is about a round trip of 14 miles. It's actually 16 miles if you park at the Curry Village parking lot. You have to walk about a mile to the trailhead. From the trailhead, it is 14 miles.

I really recommend it. It's an absolutely stunning hike.
