I am considering building a home gym in my basement. I think Im going to start off with a squat rack, bench, and etc. The basics and build it up from there. I considered a bowflex but I have tried them briefly and dont like the feel and range of motion. I like free weights and want to stick with them.

Also I work 3rd shift and it would be easier for me to not miss a work out if I had the weights available to me at any time.

Was wondering if any of you have a home gym and any advice and the best type of equipment to get started, and/or any other advice?

I have an extra space , a utility room at the back of my house. I was considering of using it for a home gym. But I kinda dont think is a good ideas. Home gym lack the atmosphere of a real gym and will do nothing to keep me motivated. It also require additional cost like having a ceiling fan, and some extra renovation cost. Probably I do in in the future, just dont think is a good idea now.

I say go to it...not only will it save u money every month(from gym memberships) but u dont have to drive to a gym. As far as motivation, motivation is required to go the gym or to walk down the stairs to your basement. I say if you prefer free weights get free weights. Get the things you know you enjoy to use for your workout.

Home gyms are great if you have a gym membership to go with it. I find that working out at home in the past I would lose interest and sometimes put it off more so than if I were going to a gym. Here's what I would do if I were to build one.

    - Squat Rack
    - Adjustable Bench
    - Dumbells and Barbell Weights
    - Stand Alone Lat Pull
    - Mirror (lol)

I'd also add a pull-up bar and a dip station. I get tired of waiting at the gym for them. I just bought my own dipping belt too, 'cause the one at the gym always disappeared.
