OK, in the US we're just getting over our Fourth of July fireworks. But after having attended a Pyrotechnics Guild International convention in 2007, everything else is anti-climatic for me, except maybe the mile-long stuff they do from barges in rivers like New York's Hudson.

Each year these folks get together in the US to have a week-long fireworks extravaganza every night. The leading fireworks display companies compete and show off their wares, and it's fantastic. Not the usual 30 to 45-minute community shows typical around the 4th, but whole evenings of aerial and ground displays that are the best the industry can manage, with all the latest innovations.

A recurring convention site is West Fargo, North Dakota, where I attended. Perfect for their purposes, the land is perfectly flat & spacious, the wind calm at night, weather reliable, and the site a fairgrounds and racetrack outside of town, where you can make all the noise you want. And with permanent stadium grandstands from which thousands can watch in comfort, every seat a great view. The next one there is Aug, 2011.

I never knew such things existed, and would recommend you attend if you like fireworks, and one is held near you.
