I've heard Dutch supporters mentioning that the Spanish goal was off-side, has anyone heard this rumour? Are there valid claims to the goal being offside? Or is this just a few Dutch supporters being bitchy queens?? icon_razz.gif

Of course it was offside. The TV replay showed it was microseconds after.

The Spanish guy was offside before he got the ball, and he was offside when he kicked it in. That was a disgrace for the entire soccer community.

The linesman had the opportunity to review the video before making that judgement?

*sigh* so it was controversial... Viva Espanya tho, but yeah, this kinda puts a damper on the enthusiasm for both sides

It is only off side if he is between the goal and the last defender when the ball leaves the foot of his teammate -- not where he is when he receives the ball. So no he was not offside as there is a Dutch defender between him and goal when the ball leaves the last Spanish player. Go watch a replay of it.

Not offside. The commentators discussed it, they showed the video replay, and it was clearly onside. I was for Holland, but it was a clean goal.

ESPN reported that the refs had a 96% accuracy rate during the Cup this year. That is pretty incredible, considering they cannot use technology to review calls (at least I never saw a ref checking a video during the entire month of play). This is one of the discussions that have been bandied about during this Cup - whether to allow new technologies into ref decision making.

from the instant replay he was clearly not off sides. The goal was clean. Refs are not allowed to review the video when making calls, just like in swimming. That all said the dutch played a very very very dirty game. I think there were more cards in this game than there were in the entire bracket. the Dutch got 9 yellow cards and a had a few that easily could have been red cards like the kung fu kick that a dutch player put into Xabi Alonso's chest. Off side or not the dutch deserved to lose, that was one of the worst shows of bad sportsmanship I have ever seen

that clip does show that he was clearly on sides. if the ball had not gone off the dutch player and the spanish player had gotten the ball the first time it went toward him he may have been off sides but it only matter where you were when the ball was kicked not where you were at any other point.

And kicking a player on the other team in the chest is a normal part of playing Football and I don't mean the american kind. Holland deserved too lose, they were horrible sportsman.
