GA Karen Handel Isn't Conservative Enough

Georgia's former secretary of state Karen Handel wants to be the state's next Republican governor. But first she's going to have to address her opponents' claims, like the one where she's in bed with radical homosexuals.

Is Handel conservative enough to be the next GOP pick? The Republican frontrunner John Oxendine just distributed a mailer (see here) to voters claiming she's pro-gay and pro-abortion — and, gasp, A LIBERAL!! Opponent Nathan Deal, a former congressman, has called her out on writing a "sponsorship" check to the Log Cabin Republicans back when she was running for a county commissioner gig, so clearly she supports the gays, right?

Of course not. Defending herself against claims she's joined LCR or something, Handel wants it made expressly clear where she differs from those fagalas: "Marriage is between one man and one woman. And I've been very very clear about that. And the record is clear about any of the other issues like domestic partner benefits or anything like that. In fact in Fulton, I voted no on domestic partner benefits."

And even though she has gay friends, she says as "a Christian, I view relationships and marriage as being between a man and a woman." She also doesn't want homosexuals adopting children. She would "consider" making it illegal. "I don't" believe gay parents are as legitimate as straight parents, she says.

Well, sounds like you're conservative enough for us, lady!

A candidate southbeach can support! icon_rolleyes.gif

I just wonder where Jews are in this picture, where Republican candidates are openly running on an exclusively Christian platform? Separation of Church & State, anyone?

Why is it that you Republicans have no sense of humor?

Because all they have is a sense of bigotry and hatred, against anything not fundamentalist Christian. I notice they did not dispute my alarm over Christian-only political sentiments, but rather merely over my mention of southbeach.

My point was the exclusively Christian political position of the Republican Party, Would they like to address that, or else try to change the subject again? Does anyone other than Christians have a place in the US today? If so, why is the Republican platform entirely Christian? I'd like to hear that answered, please.

White straight Christians are the largest voting block in the country, so Republicans feel very safe in catering exclusively to them.
Everybody else can just tough it out as far as the Republicans are concerned.

I fear that's true. I don't suppose any Republicans ever heard of the US Constitution? Nah, that would get in the way of turning the US into a Christian theocracy. Be a fundamentalist Christian, or be fucked. Non-Christians need not apply.

An assumption when this country was founded was that most people would be reasonable, and act along rational lines. The opposing view was that a supreme authority, perhaps in the form of a hereditary, non-political monarch would always be necessary to prevent any descent into madness.

And now we teeter on the edge of madness, with nothing to prevent it. Perhaps our form of government was wrong after all. As Benjamin Franklin was reported to have replied, when asked what sort of government the Continental Congress had devised: "A republic, if you can keep it."

I'm no longer sure we will. icon_sad.gif
