Just a question... How do you make yourself happy when you are feeling a little down?

I always refer to my personal list of moments when I was a small hero to someone else. I take a moment, go to my inside quiet place and relive those moments.

    Here's an example.

I met a woman in line at the supermarket this morning. She was in her late 50s, tanned, and sported a tattoo on her right upper shoulder that said,

    "Charlie,
I love you and will never leave you, never, ever, during your trials and testings. When you saw only one set of footprints, It was then that I carried you."

Now, those words were from a religious poem, but this tattoo was for someone named Charlie so (being a rather social guy) I said,
"Wow, that's devotion." and grinned at her.
She smiled, got a little teary, and choked out,
"Charlie was my grandson and died when he was two." She blinked rapidly and tried smiling.

Bill was with me and watched while I dropped everything, held out both arms and took her into the warmest embrace I could. I rocked her slightly and patted her back twice. Empathy took me and I could feel her heart beating against my ribs. I move back from her, arms outstretched but still touching and gave her a chance to see what was in my eyes.

    She gasped and said,
"You're such a kind man, you know that?" blinking rapidly again. I smiled back and something passed between us, says Bill.

So there you go. All it required was a little empathy, an opportunity, and some good old spontaneity. But the most important of all is self observation so you remember the moment with an intensity that allows you to remember the moment with your senses.

    Does that help?

I usually write a song about it lol... I dont try and talk myself out of feeling bad, because I feel thats just going into denial and trying to move the bad feeling to a later date... so I find a way to express how I feel... it does sometimes perturb others to hear how I feel, but it's very releiving to me not to have sit with it, and I can usually laugh it off after

    Vodka Redbull.

But seriously. Good bit of British comedy or the gym usually helps.

You have two options. Remain the same and be miserable or make the conscious effort to be happy and use any positive reference that will evoke that emotion.

Try to be thankful for the cards you have been dealt in your life. Make a list if you want. Then, accomplish something. It can be anything, great or small.

Btw, recently I've been looking at the word happy in a much different way: happy vs. content. There is a difference. I believe that happiness is a societally imposed expectation. Now, of course, we don't want to be miserable because misery can affect our health and our relationships with others. But seriously, have you ever had a moment in your life when you're looking out the train window and said to yourself, "Wow, I am in a really good spot in my life. I'm really comfortable in my skin." I think that's what I've been aiming for. Just my .02.

If I'm feeling sad and try to do something on my own, I ALWAYS find a way to taint it and make it feed my depression lol Watching a movie turns into "The Notebook"... listening to music turns into slow depressing songs.. it's kinda funny when you think about it.

So when I feel down.. I always try to get together with a friend. icon_smile.gif Then even if I just pretend to be okay, it's easy for me to forget about what's making me sad for a while.. and deal with it later, when I'm not feeling so sensitive.

I call my friends or my siblings and make a plan to do something. If they're not around, I get myself out of the house (Petula was right!).

    A little down:

-an episode of The Office, Coupling or Keep Up Appearances

-finding something to do for someone else

    -a trip to the gym

-taking a good book to bed and napping for half an hour

    Quite a bit down:

-a mindfulness exercise of focussing only on my breathing in this precise moment. (it's amazing what stepping out of a whirlwind of thoughts and judgements can so)

    -bitching to a friend

    - a long run

this may sound melodramatic but i look at myself in the mirror and cry it all out...somehow seeing myself cry makes me think i look funny crying and it makes me feel better...better than crying in front of somebody i guess...then smile in front of the mirror it tricks your mind to thinking that your not sad anymore...

Learn that you can't control most things in life, and to "let it go". Don't sweat the small stuff man.

Yeesh, I just re-read what I posted yesterday and have to apologize for the bad writing...what I wrote about had happened about an hour or so before I posted it and I was still awash in the experience. icon_redface.gif
