Last week, I accidentally ran into a sort of distant family member (not a blood relation). This guy is openly gay, in his late fifties, and (I thought) reasonably settled in life. I have only seen him a handful of times over the last twenty years, briefly, at extended family functions. I always remember that his immediate family gave him a hard time when he came out many years ago and, like I do with everybody, I have always been friendly and upbeat about whatever was going on in his life at the time. I greeted him as he stepped into an elevator that held me and several strangers and some cargo (tight quarters).

He immediately placed his thumb in his mouth, made an obvious deal about licking it with his tongue, ground that thumb into the palm of his hand and then shook hands with me using that hand. What was that? Did I not get the memo? Do I even want to see the memo? Just in case this is a regional thing, I was in the midwest at the time. And just in case somebody isn't following too close, it creeped me far the frick out. Now I really don't know how I to react if/when I see him again. I sure don't want to shake hands, I can tell you that.

You guys know any thing about this?

    Old-timer stuff.
The "spit and a handshake" used to be a sign of trustworthiness.

no idea what that is, another question though comes to mind - whats up with the handshake where the other person swipes their finger on your palm as they shake your hand?

I have no idea. I would have been a little "odded out" by it too. If you are truly curious, you can ask him... otherwise, it sounds like you rarely see him and perhaps aren't into him to ask.... either way is appropriate.

Knowing me, I'd probably want to know wtf.......

That is a very old ritual. It signifies the sealing of a bargain. At the root it is a sign of trust and respect.

You should be honored by the gesture.

I would not have even shaken his hand... I would have just looked at his hand and then said, "Yeah, I don't think so."
