Not intending to start controversy. Just thought it would be of interest.

Elton John's choice words for boycotting musicians

By Cathalena E. Burch Arizona Daily Star | Posted: Friday, July 23, 2010 1:00 pm

Elton John didn't mince words in slamming his fellow musicians for boycotting Arizona over the controversial SB 1070 immigration law. From the stage at his sold-out Tucson Arena concert Thursday night, John savored a few choice, not-so-family-friendly words:

"We are all very pleased to be playing in Arizona. I have read that some of the artists won't come here. They are (expletive)wits! Let's face it: I still play in California, and as a gay man I have no legal rights whatsoever. So what's the (expletive) with these people?"

John has never been one to cave into political pressure from his musical colleagues. He ignored an artist boycott of Israel in June over the flotilla fiasco and played a show in Tel Aviv. He also played Rush Limbaugh's latest wedding reception in early June, which drew the ire of gays and lesbians. Limbaugh is vehemently anti-gay marriage; John is married to his longtime partner David Furnish.

Might also point out that gay does not equal sheep. Individual thought and action still allowed.

Actually - blindly supporting the Republican party and believing and parroting Republican talking points is what's truly "sheep"-like.

Especially so considering the Republican party has an anti-gay pro-religious-right agenda and you're a gay man.

Are you a sheep, RickRick? Or a parrot perhaps?

I'm a former REPUBLICAN who's seen the light about the utter failure and disaster of Republican economic policies - which is revealed VERY clearly in the factual non-partisan historical record of the past decade - which anybody who has their eyes open should be able to see.

Unfortunately some are blinded by right-wing BS or are just to lazy to inform themselves of the actual facts..

Yeah, things went to hell when the Democrats assumed control of Congress.

That IS very clear. (note use of RickRick style)

That IS both SPIN and BS.

Do you have a keyboard shortcut for "BS" RickRick?

You type it so much, imagine the thousands of keystrokes you would save each month if you could map BS to, let's say, the ~ key. icon_wink.gif

I wouldn't have to type "BS" so much, SB, if you didn't post so much BS.

Nah, it's just the best and quickest way to describe your posts.

Perhaps Elton John doesn't agree with the reason for the boycott of Arizona.

How can Elton John compare the politics of AZ to CA? Somewhat ignorant comparison if you ask me. What law in CA presumably allows for an officer to require a citizen to display their gay card or face possible arrest and erradication to their gay country? None. What law in AZ presumably allows for an officer to require a citizen to display their citizen's card or face possible arrest and erradication to their home country? Exactly. Oh, and let's be clear. It's really only designed for Mexicans or those that may look like Mexicans because an illegal white Canadian or European wouldn't be profiled.

EJ is a twit. Always has been and always will be.

Elton John has a great point.

I've argued with morons on RJ here who choose to hate music from Jamaica JUST because of Jamaicans policy towards gays. Sure Jamaica is a backwards shit-hole country in general when it comes to gay rights. But that doesn't mean you can't appreciate good music when you hear it.

Yeah no SHIT. Arizona law doesn't discriminate against just one minority group, but California law does!

You don't overcome years of addiction the way EJ did without having great strength and fortitude and will.

He's also raised millions of dollars for AIDS charities and continues to do so.

    He's hardly a twit

Why do we always hold those that overcome adversity on such a high pedestal? Where's the recognition of those who never were so weak that they became addicted to a substance and are living good, productive lives? You don't know? Of course not. That doesn't make a saleable magazine article, book, or movie. What does that say to our children: "Sure, go ahead and dabble in whatever substance you want. Elton was able to overcome it. You will be able to also. Go ahead and have a great time with that crack pipe because you will be just fine in the end." Twit.

Wrong. It is SUPPOSEDLY for ALL illegals, but please don't tell me you're ignorant enough to think it's just not applicable to Mexicans. AZ sure doesn't border any other foreign country. And this "discrimination" are two VERY different entities. Get back to me when you're in California, a cop pulls you over and handcuffs you because you're gay.

Why do you feel you have the right to call someone a "twit"?

That kind of empty stupid personal attack just makes you look pathetic.

Elton John is one of the biggest-selling artists of all-time.
He's in the same league as Elvis and MJ when it comes to record sales.
Both Elvis and MJ died young and as a result of their extreme drug addictions but EJ overcame his.
Being a star of that magnitude places stresses on a person beyond what a normal person has to deal with.
The fact that EJ overcame his addiction problems and has lived a "good, productive" life for the past 20 years is something he deserves credit for.

For you to try to deny that makes YOU look like the "twit".

Just because you don't agree with what he says sometimes doesn't mean he doesn't deserve credit for the good things he's done with his life.
I don't agree with everything he - or anyone else - says either, but that doesn't mean I'm going to make a stupid personal attack/blanket statement about him being a "twit"

Good for Elton. He made a great point about California and how he can't get married here because of the discrimination of Prop 8 (which will eventually get overturned).

Proposition 8 is a DIRECT discrimination against Gay American citizens, where was the uproar and call for boycott against California back then?

Why do you feel you have a right to deny my freedom to call him what I want? Why don't you just allow people to have thier own personal opinions about things without being such an ass about it? You act like I was criticizing your personal opinion of the guy. Frankly, I dont' give a fart. I don't respect the guy. I don't give a rats ass if he sold more than the Beatles. My opinion of him is my opinion. And yours is yours. Let it be. F*ck, no wonder you get into so many arguments around here.
