Do you laugh when you see someone fall down?
No, actually I really don't. For instance, when I hear a crash of dinnerware or glasses in a restaurant, I refuse to look, lest it embarrass the person who broke them. I already know what happened by the sound, why do I need to stare? That it so déclassé to laugh at someone else's problem.
I take no pleasure from the misfortunes of ordinary people. In the field of public figures, when they get caught in their own lies and deceits, that is another matter. But a plain Joe who trips over his own feet? Why should I laugh at that? I may laugh WITH him as he tries to recover with good grace, but never AT him. Gawd knows I do enough stupidly clumsy things myself.
