I've always had it in my head that four sets is the "perfect" number. Obviously your goals will determine a lot, i.e. lesser weight and more reps to tone and greater weight and fewer reps to build mass. I've started noticing in publications suggestions for using only 2 sets. What do you do?

I usually do say 12 of one weight... 10 of a higher weight and then 8 of yet an even higher weight again. After that, I might go down to my mid level and work the muscle to exhaustion, then lower the weight again and do the same. icon_biggrin.gif

Your first two sets (after warmup) are going to yield the most noticeable results because your muscles are exerting the most energy. Any set after that speeds up the results some, but not as fast as the first two sets.

When I'm on a gym-twice-a-day kick, that's what I'll do: Two sets of everything in the morning, then two sets of everything in the evening (all near max, 4-8 reps). I get a MUCH better pump by the end of the day, and get sore as fuck for sometimes 2-3 days after.

PS. And I always do a few extra sets of light weight, ~20+ reps, after each workout.
