I am traveling to the Sabah for a week in Sept. I am traveling alone and flying into Kota Kinabalu. It's been difficult getting information on tours and activities. Has anyone been or have advice. I also plan to fly to Sandakan.

    Thanks!

I was there about 15 years ago..

Find a group that is hiking Mt. Kinabalu.
Go Scuba diving (or get lessons).
In Sandakan, go to see the Orang-utans, and the Kinabatangan River.

I used the Lonely Planet book on Malaysia during my trip

As Thirdbeach said, Mt Kinabalu is a v nice hike. Try to find a guide that can get you to the summit at sunrise. When we did it, we stayed on the mountain overnight and made a short hike to the summit in the dark before sunset.

Also, don't miss the Orangutan Reserve on Sandakan. Sipidan Island has some very good dive sites as do a number of other islands in the area. And the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park (which borders KK itself) has very nice snorkeling. Poring Hot Springs was another pretty good hike.

Thanks everyone --- still working on it but this has to be the most frustrating experience I've had getting information on solo traveling! Apprecreciate everyone's suggestions so far!

I think I have it pretty much set now --- appreciate the tips.

Spending 2 days in Kota Kinabalu -- National Park, Poring Springs, Orchid Park and a half day to choose when I get there.

Then 2 nights at a Lodge on the Kinabatangan River and the Oragutan Reserve in Sepilok. May check out Sipadan and explore the city of Sandakan as well.

Bringing 98% DEET and a mosquito net too!
