Is the Republican Party "self destructing? We need (at least) two strong opposition parties!

The old joke about the Democratic party was that their political strategy was to circle the wagons and fire inward. Now the joke is on the Republicans, who seem determined to self-destruct, despite the most promising political climate for them since 1994. The comments last week by Republican Senate nominee Rand Paul illustrate the depth of this self-destruction. In one breathtaking ideological swoop, Mr. Paul questioned the soundness of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as well as the Obama administration's criticism of British Petroleum in the midst of the largest oil spill in history.

Should we allow the Republican Party to self-destruct, or are they "too big to fail"?

"Allow them to self destruct ?!"

They don't need no stinking permission from us know-it-all Democrats.

It's refreshing to see that the racist, homophobic Teabagger wing of the REPUBLICAN party has pulled the curtain back and proudly showed the world what the entire REPUBLICAN party really stands for instead of being afraid to say it.

I score a 9 on that guy's sign, not sure if I can count both "homosexual" and "sodomite"?

The inclusion of potheads just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside icon_cool.gif

In Canada we have had a mixed bag of fringe groups but with two parties traditionally being dominant.

The Liberals and Progressive Conservatives. Both of which are more left leaning than the democrats in the states.

The right wing PCs saw themselves disintegrate when certain portions wanted to be more conservative.

They have effectively re-surfaced as the Conservative Party, with little change to platform or impact on the political scene. If the Republicans do the same, another group will rise with the same agenda.

That's from my home town here in New Haven! God bless us gay loving Connecticut residents. ha ha. The Yale students were mocking this weirdo who was a one-man protester.

To get back to the OP I think the Republican party is sort of self-distructing but will come back or be replaced by another. I'd love to see at least three major parties here.

Republicans are just going through the normal cycle of political parties that are in the wilderness. They have no one leader or one set winning agenda yet and have dealt with losing blow after losing blow. After this election, they will have an idea of what will win. Angle ends up losing what has been considered a prime pick up in Neveda, it will definitely weaken the power of Tea Party influence, showing that going too conservative isn't a winning formula.

Democrats went through the same thing in 2004 and into 2006, they had lost the presidential election and lost more seats in the House and Senate. They fought about direction and message, and finally found their footing as Republicans fell apart due to corruption and unpopular war.

Its just a flipped situation now, Republicans will find a winning message as Democrats have given them the opening due to economic distress and corruption. The trials of Waters and Rangel couldn't have come at a worse time, or well, a better time depending on who you root for.

    Corruption? Huh?

My prediction. The more the extreme wing of the tea party Republicans take hold, the less likely they will swing around to the support of the American people.

I guess to further define my question, "Are we our brothers' keepers?" Should be do something to help the Republican Party remain a viable voice in the political arena, or perhaps...
    This.Is.Sparta_GN.to.film.jpg

...and the Republican Party should be allowed to fall and fail.

Should a Green Party, a Libertarian party, or some other party be allowed and encouraged to fill the political vacuum that is left?

I was solidly behind the Tea Party until they came out against "Dirty Dancers"... now they've gone too far!
