Gay Marriage Legal in All Mexico!!!!!

A few hours ago the Mexican Supreme Court ruled with 9 votes in favor out of the 11 justices that all 31 states are to honor same sex marriages performed by the Federal District and, very soon, other states (Yes, marriages from abroad also, but as with any new developments it might remain a quirky process for a while).

So yes, If you come to Mexico married, you remain legaly married and rights and responsabilities cross states lines along with you.

Currently the only place in Mexico performing same sex marriages is the capital, but other states are expected to follow suit now that the constitutionality questions are being resolved by the Supreme Court.

For those of you thinking "This is what a country in which a DOMA like legislation would be unconstitutional" you can read this thread about just that and why we are not that worried:

Haha, well, you were first, you did it with an act of congress and you went all the way also with people able to marry everywhere in the country. Alas, in this case I salute the Argentinan Nation...

*Muters* But eliminate Mexico from the world cup one more time and you'll see... */Muters*

Yup...I will have to log into La Nacion to read the story, but does this cover adoption?

We NEED to win the next World Cup on Brasilian soil jaja, that would be awesome! Also, to watch my future husband Pipita - Gonzalo Higuain score me another hat trick!

But Hernandez on your team is looker too! icon_smile.gif

    wow.

It was expected to be narrower with a 7-4 ruling (They upheld the constitutionality of gay marriage 8-3) but a female justice switched her no vote after the last vote.

Cool, ours legalized everything - marriage and adoption in one go for Argentines. I think the law may differ somewhat for people just coming here to marry, and adoption isn't open to them,

So did the Federal District Legislative Assembly but that is still under challenge in the court, and even if we win this one too, in this case the goverments of the most traditionalist states can really put wide roadblocks to adoption there.

There rulings, as positive as they are mostly are paving the way for a national legislation claryfing the issues, but I think we'll have to deal with just what the Supreme Court gave us for a while.

maybe because the majority of the population in your american democracy don't really have a democratic mindset. maybe the majority really is too backward and conservative, and don't really believe in human or civil rights (except their own).

just a thought.... and just teasing icon_razz.gif

This is outstanding news, Mexico has joined Canada in having nationwide legalised gay marriage. Hopefully this will put some intense pressure on the US to consider doing the same thing but I will not hold my breath because the narrow-minded, bible thumping screwballs that have taken the GOP hostage will scream, protest, and petition. They are already foaming at the mouth over the recent federal court decision declaring proposition 8 in California to be unconstitutional. However since Mexico is predominately Catholic, I am sure Pope Nazi and his primitive minded breathren in the Vatican will throw a major hissy fit over the federal court decision in Mexico.

Standing between two countries expressing such tolerance is really highlighting our ugly side here in the U.S.
