Here is a page for reference:
    693px-US_incarceration_timeline-clean.sv

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incarceration_in_the_United_States

They want to a building at Ground Zero and call it the "Freedom Tower"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_World_Trade_Center that is 1,776 feet tall.
And yet the United States has the highest prison population in the world!

Makes about a much sense as calling it the "Slave Tower" instead and setting everyone in jail free!

As this video clip indicates, the US indeed has the largest slave population in the world. But this would make sense, given our history. Our wealth came from slavery, and we continue that tradition. We really just continue what we've always done. We just call them prisoners now, most of them Black. Not even China approaches our US slave population.

Send them to jail, leave them homeless or send them to war. That's how we deal with poor people I guess.

It happened because of the Harrison Act in 1914 and everything that followed. How is it specifically RJ Republicans' fault? No I don't think it's good, but it's better than having drug lords run free like Mexico. Next you're going to be blaming Republicans on here for allowing slavery to be around for so long. Even if the Republicans did being the process of imprisonment for drug related crimes, the Democrats play along and the public perpetuates it by electing officials who implement this crap.
If drugs were decriminalized there'd be no drug lords now would there?

    From the article linked above:
"Violent crime was not responsible for the quadrupling of the incarcerated population in the United States from 1980 to 2003."

But it is easier to type and click than read and post a thoughtful response isn't it?

I don't follow with the affirmative action part.

Fact is, it's easier to grow up in a middle class white household than a lower class minority household. I agree with people facing consequences for their actions... but we should all wonder why minorities are over representated in prisons. And... are there things that can be done to help high risk households?

Perhaps that is affirmative action--"or maybe it's for safety" and common human respect?

Just shows we need better education and law enforcement, so people learn they won't get away with crimes. Drug crimes often lead to violent crime as well, case in point: Mexico.

There are an equal number of threads (mostly started by southbeach) bashing Democrats.
How come you're only whining about the threads criticizing the Repubs?

NOT very fair and balanced of you.
Clearly you're being hypocritical in criticizing someone for having a partisan bias, when you youself obviously have a partisan bias too.

I agree, there's not one party to blame, it's issues in our society as a whole.

First of all, this isn't my thread.

Second, he wasn't blaming Republicans for "these things".
    He was blaming Republican policies.
Which is fair and balanced and NOT ridiculous.
He was only asking Repub RJ members to comment.
Which - as the OP, he has every right to do.

    You're the one who's "BLAH, BLAH, BLAH!"ing.

By thread before I meant post, my mistake. The point was in other threads recently Wilton has demanded Republicans on RJ to answer to things that he thinks are Republicans' fault. Logically, if you want someone to answer for some type of action, you are also blaming them for those actions. Why would you ask Republicans to answer for the prison rate if you do not think it is their fault? There is a lot more hostility to Wilton's post than just to elicit a comment...he is BLAMING Republicans. Or were you not Wilton?

It's not just drugs... there are plenty of so-called deadbeat dads out there, most of them for failure to pay child support due to no fault of their own. There's a veritable witch hunt going on out there by feminist judges against fathers in a divorce.

Legalise soft drugs, tax them. Oh. Now we have money again.

The prisons in the USA are private? How fucked up is that? Do taxes actually get the USA anything other than an Army to kill communists and Muslims? Like ANYTHING?*

Agree with legalizing and taxing soft drugs. And, no, our taxes don't get us much of anything because they're being use to pay private contractors to fight wars of choice. To be fair, not all prisons are private, but there has been a trend toward privatization.

Problem with legalising drugs is that people don´t want them any more. Most people in Holland view cannabis as slightly declassé, something which the oiks do. icon_rolleyes.gif

Actually, no, I don't get tired, not until Republicans get tired of bashing gays, making us into criminals, and trying to turn the US into a police state.

And before you say again: "Not ALL Republicans bash gays, and not ALL RJ Republicans here support a police state, I will say as I have before:

"If you vote for them, then you support what they do, and empower them to do it, and you are as tainted as they are."

And the Harrison Act of 1914 has virtually nothing to do with this. 1914? Are you serious? I'm talking about Republican prosecutors, and Republican judges, and Republican legislatures that have slowly caused the US to evolve into the most oppressive society in history, with the greatest number of imprisoned people that has ever existed.

In that YouTube clip they were talking about people getting 26-year sentences for stealing a handful of video tapes, nothing to do with narcotics. So try your typical Republican tactics of changing the topic on somebody else, they don't work on me.

Cause I take the time to research issues based on objective facts that can be quantified. So you can sing all the hollow patriotic songs you like, and play your "American brand loyalty" card, but if you travel anywhere in the world today you would realize the US is in the same despised position that the USSR was 50 years ago. We are mocked & hated, and quite frankly, we deserve it.

It wasn't always that way, but Republicans have succeeded in dragging us down to worldwide infamy. You really are naive, aren't you?

The Harrison Act was a catalyst for the war on drugs, which more than a quarter of people in jail now are there for, and it was a conservative policy at the time, yet also a very popular one, so I don't know how it's changing any subject. I think it's just as naive to blame all the problems in the world on Republicans.

I hope you watch this through, but if you are a Republican, of course you won't.

Although I am not a Republican, I will comment:

    1) You believe the claim that "25% of all prisoners in the world are in America/American?" There is no possible way that can be true, just based on the huge amount of the world's population that is not American/in America.

    2) More stupid Republican bashing from you, as expected. You really are the true (political) stereotype of the American gay. I'm sure you are quite proud of that.

A couple of corrections. You are Republican, and you aren't gay. But that was established here quite some time ago.
