So yesterday this little guy was walking around on the sidewalk down the street...

    spidey

(That's my roommates hand, not mine (I'm not that brave haha)).

We think it's someone's pet that escaped as this variety of spider/tarantula do not seem to be indigenous to SD (but maybe I'm wrong?)

I know we have black widows here but I'm now I'm kinda nervous about these suckers. SoCal is a desert afterall...

And all you PETA people no worries, he was rescued by a research biologist ;)

Wait, so what is the question?

I've never encountered a tarantula in my 14 years in SD. But the SD Natural History Museum asserts that there are three tarantula species indigenous to San Diego. Hard to tell from the photo if your little guy is one of those...could be an Aphonopelma reversum (but I'm no arachnologist).

BTW, your little guy seems to be missing a leg.

Tarantulas are seldom deadly... The most deadly spider is actually the Banana spider from Brazil. I forget the proper name and am too lazy to look it up however, you can die within an hour. The female adults are noticeably more larger by the legs than the tarantula and the bodies are somewhat smaller. They are also the most aggressive. They still however seem to claim the Black Widow and Brown Recluse are the most deadliest spiders in the world. It is very strange I could NOT find anything on the Bird Spider which is the largest spider in the world and a carcass is available at the Getty Museum in California. I saw it with my own eyes and it made me want to leave this earth. My guess would be this thing is enormously rare and enormously deadly. I am really intrigued however by poisonous THINGS... That includes anything that is poisonous. There is a message of karma that I get from it. Very dark... Very mysterious.

I believe it's the blue tarantula that is the most deadliest tarantula... I forgot all that I read about it though. It was fascinating though.

I came across a snake once here in SD. And scorpions. Tarantula doesn't seem out of the question.

Very interesting guys! Thanks for the insight!

Knowing now that it's possible it was indigenous kinda freaks me out but I do live right next to a canyon so it probably crawled up from there...

Btw, love your comment about the bird spider and how it made you want to "leave this earth". I have seen pictures and that thing is freaky!

Cool critter, nothing to be nervous about. Tarantulas very rarely bite people. Did he really only have 7 legs?

There is a 2-week period in the fall here in New Mexico when the tarantulas are on the move. You can see them crossing the highway even when you're cruising along at 60 mph. I'm always careful not to smush 'em.

If you've got tarantulas nearby you might also have tarantula wasps. Very beautiful bug. A big black/iridescent blue guy that lays its eggs into the spider. Again, it won't hurt you.

I grew up in a house that backed up to a canyon in SD and used to catch tarantulas to sell to neighborhood kids. Yeah, the moms LOVED me...

The tarantulas that are indigenous to San Diego are poisonous, but it's pretty mild. Nothing that will harm you permanently.

There are a few species of tarantula in SD. They are pretty harmless if you're a human...

I've seen tarantulas in the mountains and deserts of East County and Imperial County, but I've never seen a tarantula in the developed areas near the coast. Frankly, I wouldn't want to, haha.

I agree... am not too fond of anything with more than 4 legs...
