How to "steer" your PT towards certain exercises?

    So I'm into my 5th training session with my PT and it's going OK so far. I do have some free weights and a bench at home that I can do certain exercises at home (like lunges and curls). What I really need help with are those exercises that I need spotters for...how can I tell him to try to tailor my program to them?
    And no, I don't need a glorified rep counter, and I still don't know enough about lifting and I do need him.

    Uh, you're paying for a service, and the NUMBER 1 THING YOU CAN DO WRONG IS NOT TELL YOUR TRAINER WHAT/HOW YOU WANT TO TRAIN.

    Trust me, if your PT is of any value they will listen and IMMEDIATELY adapt.

    Yeah, I'd go ahead and tell him just that. It's not like he'll be upset or anything! Tell him you want to work on your bench, or whatever else you feel you need help on and he'll work your program around those basic needs...

    I disagree. I think it's the trainer's job to come up with this. You tell them your goals in the very beginning and then they figure out a plan that will work for you.

    You're both right. Your relationship with your trainer is a partnership. They have the expertise to decide what will help you achieve your goals most quickly, but in the end, it's your workout. You are the one that has to put the effort in, and if there are certain exercises or movements you like best, tell your trainer that, and he/she will be able to determine whether or not that will fit into the program.

    Exactly, he works for you (and he's probably not cheap either). There are a couple of PTs at my gym that I'd like to also "steer" towards "other" body groups.

    erm yes and no, as has been said. If you really know enough to tell him what to do, why hire him? Talk and redefine goals, but you pay him so he can tell you what to do, not vice-versa. That said, if you want to do benches, that´s part of your goals and few PTs would say "NO!!! Shut it bitch and do what I tell you. Who´s your Daddy? Huh? Yeah, I´m the Daddy. ZIP it, pussy boy"

    I think there it is so important to "interview the PT" prior to "hiring" him to work with you.... and its all about your goals and how you get there. You need to communicate those muscle groups you want to target and the exercises you use, like and why. They may or may not be appropriate given your goals... and the "road" you want to follow in achieving them.
    Communicate and listen to what he or she shares regarding your points.
    It may not be an "effective" road so to speak and they may offer different approaches. I always, always ask "why" and pick every bit of information I can.... if they don't seem interested in sharing "why".. then you probably need a PT that is more geared to your personality.

    I'd question why hes steering you towards those particular exercises first.

    Did you talk about what you wanted to accomplish?? has he been attentive to your weight lifting? has he been correcting form?

    You've had all of 5 sessions with this guy the most important question you can ask him at this point is why hes having you do the exercises he is having you do.

    A personal trainer is not just a glorified spotter, his job is to help you achieve what ever it is your goals are, so if you want to increase your bench weight, he's not just going to stick you on the bench and make you lift more, he's going to improve your arms, shoulders, back and core as well as your chest.

    So talk to him, ask him why hes doing certain things, i've NEVER run across as good trainer who wasn't eager to talk about anything fitness especially there own philosophy and those who didn't weren't really all that great at being trainers anyway.

    Im a trainer.
    One thing that pisses us off is when a customer is too wimp-like to say
    1. what he wants
    2. what he'd like changed
    and instead, quits the gym or complains to the Head trainer about being dis-satified with the training received.

    Youre a guy. Act like it and say something.
