He did an interview with Rolling Stone where he explained he had never done video before until Madonna TOLD him he was shooting a video for her ("Cherish"). He laughed and explained he was a photographer and knew nothing about shooting motion pictures. She wasn't deterred and said, "You have a few weeks to learn".

He truly had an amazing eye and a unique style. Gone too soon.

Man, he was talented. I think the picture of Jack Nicholson embodied his genius.

Nicholson's maniacal grin is already an icon. Who would have thought that a picture with a magnifying glass to make the grin even more maniacal would have captured the essence of Nicholson even more?

    True brilliance.

    That bossy bitch. icon_twisted.gif

Yeah but if it wasn't for her seeing his potential, Herb probably wouldn't have gone there.
Apparently he's also a fast learner. Look what he did for her.
    Genius.

He was gay, but as far as I know if he had AIDS it was not disclosed publicly. He died of pneumonia, which may or may not be AIDS-related.

Herb Ritts was pure genius. He paved the way for the likes of tony duran mariano vivanco and mario testinos provocative images.

His ''Fred with Tyres'' below, was the single image that inspired me to do photography. It sold for 55,000e in Christys London
