Do you wear speedos around family/str8 friends?

Okay, when I'm swimming laps for exercise, I wear speedos. When I go on vacation with my bf and tan around the pool/beach, I wear speedos. When I travel for work and use the hotel jacuzzi to relax, I wear speedos.

As a U.S. American, when I'm around my family and/or straight friends, I wear swim shorts (NOT board shorts).

Typically 4-6" inseam, so nothing ridic long...but sometimes I'd really like to wear the speedos.

Does anybody else let the audience dictate their swimwear choice?

I wear swim trunks regardless. The ones that go about mid-leg. Board shorts look ridiculous on short guys like myself. And I haven't felt the need to get a pair of Speedos, since I don't do much swimming these days.

Wearing speedos around family would just be a perversion, no matter what your nationality. icon_redface.gif

    I couldn't disagree more.
    This is a perversion:

But especially around family, the people who should love you for who you are regardless, you should wear what you want to wear. Unless you know that someone in your family is going to be extremely offended and put out by your choice of swim suit. If they're that uptight, I say don't invite them to go swimming. Ever. But the OP seems to have a flattering body for speedos, so I doubt anyone would look on him with the same *cough* disgust as the poor soul in the above picture. I say wear 'em.

Never have I worn a Speedo. Probably never will. But I would specifically avoid wearing them in front of my family.

cold said. I think they're unnecessarily self-exposing and I'd be embarrassed for anyone I knew who wore them.

Oh come on! You mean to tell me you wouldn't want to personally see Bunjamon in a nice Speedo???icon_rolleyes.gif

I would wear my Aussiebum trunks, they aren't the really skimpy brief style ones but I have a pair that are a bit briefer for sunbathing and then some that are square cut for general swimming.

If they can't handle it they can look away icon_twisted.gif

Yes, definitely audience, and I'm not entirely sure why, apparently a cultural thing more common in the US, from what I've seen around the world. And I'm hardly shy, sometimes go to a legal nude beach a few miles north of Miami Beach, and have belonged to gay naturist (nudist) clubs.

I've also worn Speedos for lap work (but not since my early 50s, that wouldn't look right, either) because those are the correct "tool" for that job, and looser trunks on a regular beach, and at our condo pool.

Some guys wear Speedos in that pool (about 70% of the residents are gay men) but since most have the bodies for them I don't object, nor to the guys on gay Sebastian Beach near here (though I wonder that sand isn't a problem for them). And at home pool parties by our gay friends some of us will swim naked if no women are present, though sometimes lesbian guests will say they don't mind. Only problem is, *I* mind. Audience.

Related story: in the 1980s my younger sister was staying with our parents on the French Riviera, where many of the women go topless. And all 3 of them were on the beach one day, where my parents told my sister that she could take her swimsuit top off like the other women if she wanted, they wouldn't mind.

As my sister later told me: "I'd been topless on that beach before. But Bob, I couldn't take my top off in front of Mom and Dad!" Audience.

I wear a "square cut" swimming suit... and that's enough I think.
I also have a longer swimming suit, it really doesn't matter where I wear.

Wrong....in the Old World straights and gays wear speedos if they have the body to wear them.

Americans as a rule are uptight with body and sexuality and space. They command or dominate many global resources but not all cultural norms and mores.

I don't wear speedos so the swimwear stays the same regardless of who is around.

That's exactly right! We reserve smugglers for our most heinous politicians... The hat was his idea.

I suppose an issue with Speedos is that they introduce an erotic sexual element to our male appearance. That is not something we do around family members, and it might even hint of incestuousness.

Speedos for men are logical if you are swimming laps. They create less drag in the water. They are the right tool for the job. The only thing better would be nudity, which indeed my generation routinely experienced in male-only pools.

But away from the practical considerations of the lap pool, at least in the US, Speedos tend to shout "Look at me! I'm sexy!" And sometimes these guys are. But who are you shouting that message at? Not family, one would presume.

So I see Speedos down on Sebastian Beach here, where gays dominate. And I see Speedos at private gay pool parties, or more typically, fashion speciality briefs with shaped pouches and built-in C-rings (when we aren't swimming nude). But elsewhere I see looser trunks. And especially around relatives.

i've always like the Tan Lines a speedo gives a man. from the rear, the tan line visually shapes and accentuates the shape of one's glutes, from the front the tan lines draws attention to the male package.

    a "win/win" combination, IMO.

none of this should be on display for family member, IMO.

I see no reason why your company/location/any other factor should influence what you wear to swim in. I usually rotate between Parke and Ronan swim shorts (the 10cm inseam ones) and a few pairs of square cut brief style trunks. I will get some glares wearing the latter on American beaches, but couldn't care less what Ma and Pa Kettle think about my swimwear decisions, let alone my own family.

As for speedos, there are people who can wear them, and people who can't. We just have to hope those who can't realize it before they make it to the beach.

I don't wear a speedo but if you can pull it off why not? As long as your boys and your ass are entirely covered and you're not rocking a thong or anything. Ha ha.

You remind me of a story. When I got together with my late partner, I had no tan line, because I always used nude beaches. But he thought a Speedo tan line was sexy & hot. So OK, my first priority is to please my partner, and give him what he thinks is hot.

It was already the winter when I learned this, so I had lost my summer tan by then. I went to a tanning salon, and laid on their tanning bed wearing not 1 Speedo, but 2, over each other, to make sure the skin underneath stayed snow white. I also used sun block down there.

I got the Speedo tan he wanted. I didn't much care for it myself, but pleasing my partner and deferring to him in matters that are really quite minor to me is how you hold a partnership together. You recognize it's not always all about YOU. You pay equal attention to HIM, and realize you are a TEAM.
