I wear short swim trunks, not like really long ones. They are maybe 6-7 inches above my knees. And no, I don't do speedos, so, I wouldn't do them in front of family anyway.

Used to wear Speedos (not with a very high-cut leg line, though). About 10 years ago my extended family was invited to one of our in-laws' houses (a lesbian couple, no less) for a BBQ. There was a pool, I didn't have any other swimsuits to wear, and I'd be damned if I would have to go out and BUY something just for the occasion...besides, I'm out to my family (even my nephews and niece) and even back then I had a better than decent gym bod. The husband of one of my sisters made a snarky remark about my Speedo...and was promptly put in his place by another of my sisters. 'If he has the body for it, then why not?'

Nowadays, I wear square-cuts...and I haven't been to any pool parties with my family since.

I have never even taken my shirt off in front of my family, so Speedos are out of the question. I would never even wear one!

Never wear skimpy speedos. You really do need the right bod to get away with those and I dont have it. Square cuts for me a la Daniel Craig.

I've worn speedos since I was in high school. Doesn't matter who I am with. Swimming laps at the gym, laying out at the pool at my complex, or at the beach visiting with family. If women can wear a teensy tiny bikini and no one has an issue with it, why should it matter to them if I wear a speedo?

Diablo29 saidOkay, when I'm swimming laps for exercise, I wear speedos. When I go on vacation with my bf and tan around the pool/beach, I wear speedos. When I travel for work and use the hotel jacuzzi to relax, I wear speedos.

As a U.S. American, when I'm around my family and/or straight friends, I wear swim shorts (NOT board shorts).

Typically 4-6" inseam, so nothing ridic long...but sometimes I'd really like to wear the speedos.

Does anybody else let the audience dictate their swimwear choice?

I think if you would have worn speedos around friends and family since the beggining nothing would have been tought about it.

But a suddent change will probably get you the casual what made you want to wear speedos question.

Because you have, I trust, some junk down there that women lack. And that's the difference.

This can get very complex, because we're overlaying the majority straight value system with our minority gay values. In a purely gay world it would be quite different.

And indeed, I see that gay world, at gay resorts, and private gay pool parties, and gay beaches, where Speedos are tame.

But we are forced to live in 2 worlds, straight & gay, and primarily in a straight world, where we are there mostly by permission, at least in the US.

Go to parts of Europe, and you can wear a tiny thong. Or nothing at all. But your question is irrelevant to the US, which is sexually repressive and backward, the sexual Third World. Have you traveled outside the US? That might provide you some helpful insights.

I grew up swimming at a pretty intense level (15,000 meters a day--over 9 miles, no joke), and all the guys wore speedos, so it was never a big deal--not sure where all the speedo-hate is coming from on this thread. When I swim laps now I still always wear a speedo-style suit (Orca is the current favorite).

If I'm hanging with friends at the lake or at a family beach, it's definitely regular old swim trunks, though. And I agree, some guys are better suited to speedos than others.

Used to years ago when the family would come out east and go to the beach with us. I can't imagine why any fit man would be embarassed to wear them. Too old for them now.

I love wearing speedos(I have a speedo fetish), and think they look hott on the right guys!!!

I only wear them right now, in private around my gay friends, or at a gay event! around family, friends, the every day regular beach and pool, I wear them but under my board shorts!

As I get my body a little more defined and built up, I will start to wear them more at regular stuff and around friends n family!

For I agree that if they dont like tough, they arent wearing it. I'll wear what I want/like to wear! they dont have to look!

So I say speedos all the way!!! (as long as you have the body for it)

Well, there is an ebb & tide to these things, to use a watery metaphor. When I was in college, the more common brand in the US was called Ocean Pool, which most swim teams used. It was 100% nylon, no lycra, and was actually a double bikini, an entire smaller & tighter suit inside a larger one.

The idea was to prevent your stuff from making a recognizable imprint on the outer layer, which was slightly slack. I wonder how many guys here would remember that?

wow I can't believe how uptight all you young guys are. Speedos and other makes used to be pretty much the norm at all pools and beaches everywhere up until about 15-20 years ago. Yeah , you really should have a great bod for them but back then nobody seemed to care like you all do now. Makes going to the beach these days somewhat boring. No baskets to leeer at LOL
