Whey after Cycling?

I teach cycling regularly and I have two participants who do an hour-long class with me and hydrate throughout. However, once class is over, they bust out some Whey Protein and chug it.

As a cardio-phile, I have never thought of drinking anything but water or something to replenish electrolytes; nonetheless, I was curious if other people here are a little shocked like I was. I haven't asked why they do it (not my business), but all I can think of is that they are hoping to gain leg muscle mass. After such a class, (hour of climbs, sprints, hills, etc...) the body need a lot quickly to properly restore itself. I never thought of a protein shake.

    thanks

I never heard of protein shakes after cardio, either.

A mix of protein and carbohydrates post-workout can help with recovery, glycogen replenishment, increase protein synthesis and improve rehydration but straight whey protein after cardio is not necessary nor beneficial. A hydrolyzed whey (7-15g) mixed with carbohydrates (20-30g) is sufficient with 8oz or more fluid.
