Is there music that really makes you say "wow" or even has the power to make you cry? Is this because it relates to your life, or something else?

The Smith's classic song 'How Soon Is Now' used to mean a lot to me and I am sure to a lot of other gay men with lyrics like these:

"There's a club, if you'd like to go
You could meet someone who really loves you
So you go, and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
    And you go home
    And you cry
    And you want to die

When you say it's gonna happen now,
    When exactly do you mean?
See I've already waited too long
And all my hope is gone"

    Beethoven Sonata op.110

    -Structurally straightforward
    -Technically, extremely difficult
    -Emotionally? It's life changing

There's a song by a Japanese group, Ketsumeishi (which literally translates to 'Ass Police') called Tomodachi (Friend/Friendship) which my friend showed me the music clip to and I actually cried. I can't listen to the song very often, I heard it when it was a pretty unstable time for me.
And Jon Bon Jovi's Always gets me choked up as well.

    Tomodachi Translated

We'll always be friends, but time passes
Raised together in these changing streets
Amassing power in this town, you decided
To make a new start; good luck to you

We'll always be friends, but time passes
In different towns and different streets, on different roads
We've chosen, in our random lives
We live together; good luck to you

How many years have piled up?
How many days have passed without my noticing?
The monkey bars in the park
Where we talked endlessly about nothing, now look so small
What we could see on the other side of that mountain
Is now all concrete and apartment buildings
Time's passed so quickly, before I noticed
When we were struggling, still incomplete
We believed in what we saw, and laughed
My friends from back then haven't changed, though they left this town
The streets are still here, feeling the same
If we meet again, let's walk through on these legs
Through the changed streets, looking around
And talk endlessly, feeling like we did back then

How many years has it been since we met?
Attacking adults with the spears of our irritation
We learned from each other and now we've become adults ourselves
    Now we understand, we're friends
The scenery changes with the snoring of history
The nostalgic streets are suddenly over there
Though my friends have left the nest of the town we were raised in
Our feelings won't change, that's life
How many years have we sweated?
    Are you guys still running?
Always looking forward, looking up, making it "my way"
And praying, that's what I love about you

You give though you're far away, defeated by this way of life
Climbing up with my friends, til the day we become real men
Til the day we understand, the day we both change
    I'm right, aren't I? Let's be like that; let's meet again, smiling

We'll always be friends, but time passes
Raised together in these changing streets
Amassing power in this town, you decided
To make a new start; good luck to you

We'll always be friends, but time passes
In different towns and different streets, on different roads
We've chosen, in our random lives
We live together; good luck to you

Time passes in these changing streets
And as they take whatever shape they please, you start on your journey
Have I become used to this scenery? I looked up at the sky
Without me noticing, the stars have gotten fewer
Where are you so far away, my friend?
You raised your voice so it would reach me, "I'm here"

Time has passed since that day
Those streets are still left somewhere in my memory
I may forget them without realizing it
But looking back, we grew up together
Is the color of the sunset burned into your heart?
Are the tears we cried together dried?
We're each following our own paths
And as we do, we create our own tomorrow
Though things change, there are some things that remain the same
You are always in my heart, in my dreams
The farewells with everybody pile up
You give them each something and then leave
Running a long way to an unknown day
We both have a long way to go
But we're earnest and well get there

The farewells with everybody pile up
You give them each something and then leave
All these meetings, your wish isn't logical
You wrote here that it's my fortune

Before you start on this new journey, your hopes...

Tell me sometime, if we meet again
Tell me everything, if we meet again

Again with this new feeling in your heart
    Your hopes take off

Tell me sometime, if we meet again
Tell me everything, if we meet again

The things you're insecure about now...

Tell me sometime, if we meet again
Tell me everything, if we meet again

Now that I think of it, I was insecure back then...

Tell me sometime, if we meet again
Tell me everything, if we meet again
Tell me sometime, if we meet again
Tell me everything, if we meet again
Tell me sometime, if we meet again
Tell me everything, if we meet again

Music ALWAYS touches my heart and my emotions....

From U2....Pride (In The Name Of Love)

One man come in the name of love
    One man come and go
One man come here to justify
    One man to overthrow
    In the name of love!
One man in the name of love
    In the name of love!
What more? In the name of love!

One man caught on a barbed wire fence
    One man he resists
One man washed on an empty beach
One man betrayed with a kiss

    In the name of love!
What more in the name of love?
    In the name of love!e
What more? In the name of love!

...nobody like you...there's nobody like you...

    Mmm...mmm...mmm...
    Early morning, April 4
Shot rings out in the Memphis sky
Free at last, they took your life
They could not take your pride

    In the name of love!
What more in the name of love?
    In the name of love!
What more in the name of love?
    In the name of love!
What more in the nam of love...

It also touches a much more primal and angry power...like Phil Collins, "I Don't Care Anymore"

    Well
you can tell everyone I'm a down disgrace

Drag my name all over the place -
    I don't care anymore.
You can tell everybody 'bout the state I'm in

    You won't catch me crying
    'cos I just can't win -
    I don't care anymore
    I don't care anymore

I don't care what you say
I don't play the same games you play.
    'cos I've been talking to
the people that you call all
    your friends
And it seems to me there's a
means to an end - they don't
    care anymore.
And as for me I can sit here and bide my time

I got nothing to lose if I speak my mind -
    I don't care anymore
    I don't care no more

    I don't care what you say -
we never played by the same
    rules anyway.
    I won't be there anymore
get out of my way - let me by

    [ Find more Lyrics on http://mp3lyrics.org/ajl ]
I got better things to do with my time

    I don't care anymore
    I don't care anymore

    I don't care anymore
    I don't care anymore.

    Well
I don't care now what you say
'cos everyday I'm feeling fine with myself.
And I don't care now what you say
    hey -
I'll do alright by myself 'cos I know.

'cos I remember all the times I tried so hard
And you laughed in my face 'cos
you held all the cards -
    I don't care anymore.
    And I really ain't bothered
    what you think of me
'cos all I want of you is just a let me be -
    I don't care anymore
    d'you hear I don't care no more

    I don't care what you say - I never
    did believe you much anyway
I won't be there no more
so get out of my way - let me by

I got better things to do with my time
    I don't care anymore.
    D'you hear I don't care anymore
    I don't care no more.
You listening I don't care no more
    no more.
You know I don't care anymore
    don't care no more
    no more

and yet another equally moving power is that of wonder and amazement and humility from RUSH the song is "MISSION"

    Hold your fire,
    Keep it burning bright
Hold the flame 'til the dream ignites
A spirit with a vision is a dream
    With a mission

    I hear their passionate music
Read the words that touch my heart
I gaze at their feverish pictures
The secrets that set them apart

When I feel the powerful visions
    Their fire has made alive
I wish I had that instinct
I wish I had that drive

    Spirits fly on dangerous missions
    Imaginations on fire
    Focused high on soaring ambitions
    Consumed in a single desire

In the grip of a nameless possession
A slave to the drive of obsession
A spirit with a vision is a dream
    With a mission.

    I watch their images flicker
Bringing light to a lifeless screen
I walk through their beautiful buildings
And I wish I had their dreams
But dreams don't need to have motion
    To keep their spark alive
    Obsession has to have action
    Pride turns on the drive

    It's cold comfort
    To the ones without it
    To know how they struggled
    How they suffered about it
If their lives were exotic and strange
They would likely have gladly exchanged them
For something a little more plain
Maybe something a little more sane

We each pay a fabulous price
    For our visions of paradise
But a spirit with a vision is a dream
    With a mission.

just about anything penned by pete townsend will cause me to reflect on my life, as will much of joni mitchell's ouevre and most of josh ritter's work. so does a lot of stevie nicks's music. i mean, i listen to music constantly so i'm constantly seeking something that makes me think and feel.

Maybe because I reached the milestone birthday 40 not too long ago, Joni Mitchell's Both Sides Now suddenly had much more meaning form me. Great song. I have the lyrics and a live performance video of it on my profile page.

cold saidThis song really speaks to me and is very relevant to a time in my life. It's more than just the lyrics though - the sound of her voice and the music stir up emotions almost as if the sounds were describing how I felt.

    love love love this song
