I want to start controlling my calories more effectively, but I'm a bit clueless when it comes to counting how many calories are actually going into me from the food I eat.

Does it really come down to walking around with one of those calorie counter things in my back pocket, or is there a bit of a method one can use to look at a meal and work out how many calories are going to go in?

Happy just to be pointed in the direction of useful resources online..

www.myfitnesspal.com has helped tremendously since I carry with my Droid X apps. I just punch in through out the day what I eat- additionally it searches the brand name etc. and calculates: calories, fats, protein, carbs, etc. I can then know if I am on target for the day. It also calculates your exercise through out the day if you punch in your workouts.

I got this thing 2 days ago for iPhone. It is so amazing and accurate!!! You can type in any food and it will find the exact brand and you can even change the serving size! I was having the same problem where I would eat all day unaware of all the calories I was eating... My biggest surprise was finding out just how quickly you go through calories in one day! All the meals and snacks add up so fast before the day is over.

Fitday.com - free account, works well for auto calculating calories and macro nutrients. Just write down what you eat on a pad of paper or make a note in your phone and enter it when at the computer. Much easier and less cumbersome the a calorie counting guide.
