I'm dubious. I suspect it's a conservative ploy, a tactic, to weaken gay support for Democrats.
Remember how gay-friendly George Bush sounded during the 2000 election? Then he turned on us once in office, one of the most gay-hostile Presidents in memory. It's all about tactics.
Seduce voters to get elected, then screw them. I wouldn't trust a conservative as far as I could throw him. And even the few who might be genuinely pro-gay are outnumbered by those who are gay-hostile.
And as we all know, conservatives in the Republican Party all vote as a block, and their official Party platform is still virulently anti-gay. They will vote as they are told, and they will be told to vote against gays by their leadership. Is this in doubt? I don't care what individual spokespersons says to deceive us -- what do the elected office holders say, who will actually vote on these issues in Congress and state legislatures?
