Sleeping Abs

This week at the gym I was doing a back routine from this site and it was kicking my butt. In between sets, I went and laid down on a matt to start doing crunches and suddenly I found myself asleep. I mean, I literally fell asleep in the middle of my workout for 20 minutes. Crazy!

Anyone else ever have this experience? Am I working out too much? Over training? Or just plain tired? Thoughts?

Thats really weird. You could have fainted. The blood vessels in your abs can expand enough to drain all the blood from the rest of your body. That, coupled with an exhausting workout, really could have deprived your brain of oxygen.

I did not know this.... maybe that's why I always feel so out of it after my trainer pushes me during my abs workouts.....

    That's hilarious!
(And, um. also pretty obviously untrue, just to be clear.)

To the OP, I gotta say that doesn't sound even remotely normal to me.
I'd definitely watch myself if I were you, and at least mention it to the doc the next time you see him.
I have never had a remotely similar experience during exercise.
If you're sleep deprived you're sleep deprived, of course.

Get checked out. No matter how tired I've been, I've never come close to falling asleep during a workout.

I've fallen asleep on the weight bench immediately after a workout; but I workout at home and it was a conscious decision to do so, because I was already tired.

Like others have said, see a doc. That doesn't sound normal.

I've watched my BF fall asleep mid-ab routine. He wanted a quick 30s rest and rested on the mat and was out for a solid 10 minutes.

That's cute, haha. I have never actually fell asleep, but I'll start yawning after some sets. I have a feeling I'm going to fall asleep in the middle of bench presses soon... Not cool!

Maybe you weren't asleep, more like unconscious? There are normal things that could cause that, but it's time for a trip to the doctor for a checkup to rule out the nasty stuff, Mr Snoozy.

I've seen guys fall asleep while I was having sex with them (unfortunately) but I've never seen a guy fall asleep during a workout.

No, it will never happen because your abs are filled with other things like muscle, but the network of vessels is so dense that they have the theoretical capacity to. They still can take a significant amount of blood though.

I actually saw someone fall asleep mid ab routine. The reason they fell asleep was improper breathing; he passed right out. Working the core is hard work! I've seen something similar after someone squatting heavy weights. He stood up to fast and just collapsed.
