    Hey Guys -

    Some friends and I are doing a trip to California in August and want to get some surfing in.

    Where are the best places to go? We are in and out of LAX but will be driving around (up to San Fran and out to Las Vegas) so almost anywhere would be good.

    One thought was santa barbara or santa cruz. Where do gay guys surf?!

    thanks

    if you come down south, carlsbad state beach is a good break. not a huge local scene and the waves are pretty steady. Black's beach is usually good, too, but it's a bitch to get to, though the scenery can sometimes be worth the trip, lol. (sometimes you see things you wish you hadn't however.)

    Not sure if you're gonna make it all the way down to San Diego or not, but if you do, those are both good places...

    There's also a decent break in encinitas, called pipes...mostly surfed by the older guys so you don't get as much attitude from them as you do in other places.

    Do you know how to surf or were you looking for instruction? I also have a friend who owns a surf school...I've taught there a few times..mostly kids, but he does adults, too.

    what do you ride? long/short?

    I'll be out there in august too...up in C-bad, so stop by and drop in..

    Im on hollywood beach here in oxnard. Not much surfing here but down the street on silverstrand beach its pretty good. There is always surfers point in Ventura. That stretch of the beach is pretty much popular all summer long with surfers..especially Faria Beach.

    I am about 45 minutes north of LAX up the coast from Malibu. Just take the PCH and youre here!

    if you come to malibu, then you have to surf third point, it's right where the malibu colony starts.

    Thanks very much for getting back to me.

    We have all surfed before but at most twice (and me personally only once) and have not had tuition, so it would be really great to find a school which can give us some beginners tuition. Where is your friend's school?

    Sounds like you're saying San Diego (Carlsbad or Blacks). Is Blacks very gay then? Not essential but would be fun to be surfing with gays! Is there anywhere further towards Santa Barbara or Santa Cruz?

    Seems a couple of you guys are recommending Blacks Beach. Is that San Diego way?

    Blacks beach is a nude beach with some indecent sexual activity going on. Mosty there's fat old guys there, but also the ocassional group of young college guys just checking it out. The surf there is great tho, and so is Cbad. But since you're a beginner, I'd suggest to go to Torrey Pines or La Jolla Cove if you're in SD. You'll avoid most of the more experienced surfers who will give you a lot of attitude for not knowing how to surf, and some will even yell at you and cut you off.

    If you're going to be all over California, Santa Cruz (Cowell's cove), San Luis Obispo (Pismo), and Santa Barbara are also great for surfing.

    Just a note on Santa Barbara.... no surf during the summer, totally sucks. I lived there for 10 years and the only time you get surf is during winter storms and then you have to wait for the right swell direction because the Channel Islands block most of the waves. Ventura to the south has better waves.... Zuma is really good too for body surfing :-)

    San Francisco surf does not exist during the summer. Better to say in the southern California area.

    Zuma and Sunset are both reliable, broad, breaks in Malibu (just northwest of LA, and Sunset is just North of Santa Monica). I'm a beginner too, and these are recommended for beginners by local surf schools. You should not encounter any localism, but definitely follow proper etiquette.

    In and around Santa Cruz:
    * 30th and East Cliff (advanced)
    * Pleasure Point (same)
    * Lighthouse
    * Natural Bridges
    * Four Mile
    * Moss Landing

    And in SF - -
    * Ft. Point

    These are just my favorites. For any detailed questions or directions, just e-mail me.

    Rincon is supposed to be one of the best places to surf in the world and it's close to Santa Barbara (on the border of Santa Barbara and Ventura counties)
