The "Suggestions to improve the current message board situation (fake profiles, multiple crazy, belligerent posting)" thread appears to have disappeared.

That's ok. It had taken on all the characteristics of a constitutional convention.

I'm really pretty annoyed by this as I spent quite a time writing a thoughtful, considered set of suggestions that I think would be quite helpful if implemented. And the thread had a great many other good ideas on it---not least that it contained a valuable discussion of what the objectives and criteria to judge the success of improvements might be.

I think that the random deleting of threads is really one of the most ridiculous features of RealJock.

HisExBoyfriend saidGet over it! Do you pay to belong to this forum? Some of you guys act like you're the fucking owners. You don't own this website, you pay nothing to belong or post here, so just take your B.S. somewhere else if you aren't happy with the way things are run around here, and shut your mouths! ;)

It'll be interesting to see who you turn out to be, but the trope of ending your immediately inflammatory post with a wink already kind of gives you away.

As for the thread you are right, it's gone. I started it but I didn't delete it. It was turning into a mud fest, anyway. Chris and I have been talking. We have anti-Stuart measures now.

    Hi guys,

Sorry about that. I removed the thread from the listings but I still have access to all of your comments and suggestions, many of which were very helpful.

Tim, I read the Slashdot rules and found them intriguing but I can't implement them now because I don't have enough time. I'll definitely return to them as I try and improve our system in the future.

Thanks again everyone for all of your help. You'll be seeing changes over the next few days. Feel free to write in with more suggestions. I'll resurrect the other forum after we've had some time to see if the changes have helped.

just send it to chris thru the Help button....he'll get it. It was dragging on after being beaten unmercifully, as do most threads here....Keithicon_cool.gif

Yeah I was in the middle of reading the pages of it when it suddenly disappeared...But I did catch the post where Chris of Realjock mentioned he was going to move the thread off of the boards so I wasn't surprised when it happened.

Well, I think this incident is almost a textbook demonstration of the flaws of the administrator-as-god model for online moderation. It really makes no sense at all that the thread was deleted. It also sets a terrible precedent: why would anyone bother to invest any time at all in making constructive suggestions if they are to vanish without warning? How is the effectiveness of the changes you make to be assessed without the criteria proposed? Perhaps in future you might post at the top that this thread is for community input and will be deleted at such-and-such a time.

Still, it's your forum and you can of course do what you like. It bothers me only a little that you now have in your possession something that I wrote and no longer have access to.

Well I was in the midst of writing my suggestion when the thread was removed....so strange!

    But here goes anyway-

I like the idea of a SPAM button...but I think whomever "pulls the trigger" should be asked why they think the post/thread is objectionable. It will prevent people from hitting SPAM just because they don't agree with someone...or, just abusing it.

If legitimate complaints (SPAM) about a particular post comes up with reasons that are sound...actions should be taken.

If someone is abusing the SPAM button actions should be taken as well because I think this can be equally detrimental.

    My 2 cents.

Now you can delete this thread as well HA HA.

Only having been here a year, I can say the problem of fake and multiple profiles seems to have been a problem that has worsened over the last half of that year. Preventing these fake and multiple profiles might allow the administrator of this site more time to deal with some of the real profiles who cause problems by just using the existing rules of RJ.

    Hi guys,

I've restored the other forum. I didn't realize it would upset everyone so much.

    Sorry for the hassle.

No worries from me, Chris. I'm grateful that you are taking the time to hear your "guests" concerns and ideas, and are working to make your "public accommodation" a more inviting and "self-moderating" place to visit.

Thanks for all your hard work in serving this virtual online community!

The fact that we can remove just one trouble maker at a time now excites the shit outta me.. Go get em Ciar! ; )

One trouble maker is really all we need to remove right now. The Forum didn't have any other disabling problems before this.

I'm starting to see how the "Ignore" function works now....I'm seeing comments quoted from people that I don't see postings from in the thread...Or maybe they got deleted....Hmmm...icon_wink.gif

But the other thread was an interesting read, glad its back. I've made at least one ToS violation in the past, totally unintentional and innocent but in hindsight it should have been obvious. I'd hate for an one-strike and you're out policy.

Most people wouldn't notice (much) the occassional or minor TOS violation.

    Hi guys,

I just pushed a first version of the Spam/TOS link to the forums. I guarantee it's not perfect and I want you to know that if anyone gets blocked that shouldn't be, I will unblock you as soon as possible.

Having said that, I'm in much need of a break so I'm signing off for now and will check in again early tomorrow morning.

    Thanks,

    Chris

So if one clicks that link, the poster gets automatically and immediately blocked until he is restored. Oh, that would be great for a suicide-spam/TOSer. Just go down and block everybody before leaving.

    Holy cow.
There will be nothing left in the forum to read because every post will be marked, "Spam/TOS Violation."
