First Time Ever to a Gay Bar...

I went to Key West this weekend. I didn't expect to visit a gay bar as I have always been terrified of them. I don't like drag and things like that. My boyfriend gave me enough confidence to walk into a gay bar called Bourbon Street Pub while we were there. It wasn't too bad. There was a great atmosphere inside with loud music playing as well as a cool pool/patio area out back. Although I don't plan on regularly attending gay bars, it was a pleasant surprise to visit this place. I made my bf bring me back the 2nd day icon_smile.gif

PS. It was also nice kissing my bf in public for the first time ever in the gay bar ;)

Has anyone else had an experience like this one before?

I always wanted to go to a gay bar since I found out they existed. Been going to them now since age 21. Some are better than others, but none of them are completely mundane and boring. Gays like to have fun. icon_biggrin.gif

That sums up my first experience....However I actually went to one in the town I live in...I had imagined so many horrors but at the end of the day...it wasn't too bad...

I was a lil scared that I would see someone I knew, but I got over it really fast. It was nice to see normal looking guys inside too. I mean... there were a hand full of guys that looked a lil creepy, but decent guys for the most part.

Gay bars are, at best, simply places where gay guys can hang out comfortablycarrying on pretty much as they like. Some have way too much attitude and some are quite mellow. the best gay bar I ever went to was full of straight people who simply did not care. You could get a beer inside and go out under a big old tree and put your feet up.

I enjoy the clubs more than the bars, but can have fun at either one. I prefer going with friends because they enhance the atmosphere. Some gay bars can be sketchy, so I tend to not return to those, no matter who wants to go. So glad to hear that you had fun and felt free to express yourself there with your bf...isn't that the whole point?

I've been going to gay bars/clubs since I was 16.

Right now, my favorite gay bar is this place down the street from me called Savoy (there's also a Savoy in Orlando, but the one in Daytona is much nicer). More straight people than gay people go there, but as LJay said, they just don't care.

It's so nice to see people rise above their fears and misconceptions, and broaden their horizons...

Me and my bf walked past a sleezy gay bar there that had drag queens outside... one of them "meow'd" at us. It was really weird, so we walked away fast. This bar was a lot better. The only thing gay about it was that there were a few guys walking around in sexy underwear.

Yes, and I know the Bourbon Street Pub quite well. Have been there when there's been a dancer on the bar, clad only in a handkerchief wrapped around one leg and over his stuff. The "Man Cave" out back beyond the Tiki bar is also interesting. I've also swum nude in that pool out back.

Upstairs is the New Orleans House where you can stay in fairly decent rooms, with a very large veranda that overlooks Duval. My partner & I have been there, and may again this November. We had a nice duplex with a full kitchen, including cooking & eating utensils.

But we can have the experience you describe any day we want. If you're in Fort Lauderdale you can right there, too, or drive over to Wilton Manors. Any bar or club there allows the same freedom. Try the Alibi, Rosie's, Scandals, or Tropics for starters. Or the Living Room off Las Olas.

Where, in Daytona? If so, I know EXACTLY which bar you're talking about lol

I've never been to a "Queer as Folk" rave-type gay bar...I think that would weird me out a little, lol

I think he meant also in Key West, which would likely be either the 801 Bourbon Bar, or the Aqua Nightclub, both of which feature drag shows.

First gay bar I ever walked in to was Pecs in San Diego. It's a great place now, but was pretty seedy back then. It was pretty much what I pictured a gay bar to be, dark as hell, guys having sex in the back where you couldn't see your hand in front of your face.

The bartender (who was missing two fingers on one hand) followed me into the bathroom and offered me a blowjob.

    lol

My first was Apex in DC Good Lord, that was already 4 years ago. Fond memories. They cater mostly to 18-22 years old, so I already feel too old to go back.

Glad to hear you had a good experience.

Went through the same "what if someone I know sees me", but you get over it when you're busy throwing looks to the guy on the other wall.

Perhaps the most awkward/refreshing person to 'catch' me was an ex-gf who was very cool with it.

Lucy had some 'splainin to do..

Good for you! I'm a big fan of them. I was very nervous the first couple times as well, but once you realize that most are not much different from straight bars (except for less women and better music), they're a lot of fun!

And they can be quite the ego boost!

the first time i went to the gay bar here (there was only one until just recently) i was terrified id run into someone since i had barely come out to 1 person. It was intimidating at first, but i got more comfortable as i kept going. The novelty wore off though after a while until they opened a new gay bar here, which they dub the str8 friendly gay bar since its in the same building as a str8 bar, and most of their patrons are str8 people who overflow from the other club, lol. I much prefer the new gay bar because its basically a lounge atmosphere, and theres more str8 people than gays so i tend to fit in better i find.

Kudos to the OP, but I don't think I have mustered enough courage/confidence/will to walk into a gay bar. It's like walking into an A&F store. Very intimidating because everyone appears so perfectly groomed that I may damage the aura of the place.
