And consequently thinking about dosing myself up on some cold and flu tablets and taking myself an easy-ish full body routine (I normally do a split up jobby 5days/week).

But then someone said that hitting the gym whilst sick was A Very Bad Idea.

Opinions and experiences on that one?
Should I just try and be patient and wait til I can breathe normally again.

What does your common sense say? Just do those exercises.

Warming your mucles might alleviate or lessen the aches.
As long as you don't have a high temperature and can maintain balance, it's OK to do mild exercise. Don't over exert yourself. Just take a fast-paced walk if you ran before, or just run slower.

If you feel weak, I wouldn't try lifting the highest weight possible.

Wear appropriate clothes to "steam" out your aches and pains. You don't need pills to get over your flu. All they do is mask the symptoms and make you think you feel better. The flu will just go away on it's own.

If it´s simply a cold then I would do something gentle. If it´s anything more serious then rest. Do you feel like working out? Are you capable of going to the gym, trying 5 minutes and admitting that you are not up to it and then going home, or will you try and "power through"?

If it´s merely a cold it shouldn´t stop you....

I feel you on this one. I've been sick for the past two days and I feel miserable. I dance for hours a day, and being sick has left me weak as hell. I get light headed when I dance for too long, and my body doesn't like to cooperate. I say definitely get some rest until you feel better, or like lostboy said just do light weights if you don't feel that fatigued.

MuchMoreThanMuscle saidAs a courtesy to others please do NOT go to the gym as your will spread your cold to others.

I second that motion. There are people with compromised immune systems at the gym you could spare by staying home.

This right here. No one wants to pick up your sniffles on the bench press.

    Thanks.

It's more like a flu then a cold.. but whatever, I took the advice proffered - stayed away from the gym (and kept my germs to myself!) and have gone for a really gentle jog the last two days. The first outing slayed me but I felt much stronger today. I'll go again tomorrow and then look at returning to the gym on Monday.

I think rest was what was required - nothing wrong with slow and steady I guess.

And I suppose it's only been one single week..
