Do gay guys hate rock music?

Based on my experience at gay venues in different cities (in the US and abroad), there seems to be an aversion to rock, heavy metal, punk, industrial, etc. Why is it you almost never hear a rock/etc. at a gay bar nor hear gay guys extolling the virtues of non-pop genres, specifically rock? Do we hate rock music? Why? Any thoughts on this???

(As an aside, would you personally support a gay bar that played different genres of music on the same night?)

I'm with Paulflexes on this one, I'm a 70's/80's baby (not literally, but music wise yes). I don't really care for modern day rock because it all sounds the same in my opinion... When it comes to rock, classic/classic hard rock, etc. is what I like to listen to.

(I.e. Rush, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Dire Straits, The Police, yada yada yada yada)

    Uhhh...

Well, I've semi-noticed it too...but I fucking love me some modern rock bands, emo bands and punk bands. Guess I'm in the minority.

    Breaking Benjamin
    Rob Zombie
    Marilyn Manson
    Flyleaf
    Senses Fail
    Silverstein
    Linkin Park
Evans Blue before they replaced their singer...

I hate all kinds of generalizations. icon_lol.gif

I tend to like a few songs here and there, rather than the entire output of a band. Queen would be the closest thing to a band whose work I like nearly all of...but not absolutely 100%. Some Led Zeppelin (tho Stairway To Heaven just makes me think of how I could re-write it as satire, I luuuuuuv D'Yer Maker). Some early Heart (Barracuda, Straight On (no pun intended), and some of their 'big-hair' 80's songs too). A few Van Halen (but slightly more Sammy than David Lee). My general feeling is, 'play it, I'll tell you whether or not I like it'.

And I love the faggy stuff too...Madge, Janet, Kylie, et al...so go figure.

I prefer Rock Nacional, but I do like Rock Music in General, along with Pop, Dance, Electronic, Reggae, Samba, Alternative, Japanese Pop, some Arabic Pop, and as far as Tool.

I'll have to agree with Amar about stereotyping.

bigeasydude, ah those singers aren't crappy at all! just your geezer attitude and your 2 year old photo icon_smile.gif

I love rock... APC, breaking benjamin, CHEVELLE (best band of all time), depends what I'm doing though. If i'm drinking I tend to like anything with a good beat.. so more pop-ish stuff, when I'm in the car or lifting weights... rock.

Same here. I hardly listen to much besides rock, not for lack of trying. Most other musical genres either irritates me too much or bores me to death, though I can appreciate some good jazz, blues or country, and the very rare rap song or two. Classic rock (and some modern stuff) is usually blasted on my iPod.

Most other gay people I've met don't appreciate rock, and they look at me like a leper when I tell them the kind of music I like. I don't want to stereotype, but I can't seem to escape from it.

Different genres on the same night? Probably impractical. 'Hard Rock Mondays' would be a bit easier to manage. If a club is big enough (G-A-Y at the Astoria used to be like this, and so was the 'bear' club XXL, both in London), one room could be for the 'gay disco' and another separate room could be for 'hard rockers'...and in London I noticed a fair number of clientele drifting from one room to another.

    I WANNA ROCK!!! icon_cool.gif

Remember boys and girls, bands like Judas Priest and Queen were fronted by two gay men, and they have contributed the biggest influences in music history.
But anyway, I love rock. icon_wink.gif
