Has anybody seen this? It's no Academy Award winner, but I was floored and to put it mildly I think it changed my whole outlook on things.

I was having a hard time knowing if I just had a boner for guys or if I wanted to be with one for the rest of my life, and seeing the relationship in the movie put things in perspective. Essentially it is two chill surfer guys who have none of the gay stereotypes falling in love.

What I think is so awesome is that it is the first time I've seen a relationship in the media that immediately hit me and made me think "Fuck yeah, this is exactly what I want!" I think most gay mainstream relationships are based on stereotypes that the mainstream media wants to portray. Seeing two guys that I have a ton in common with love each other immediately changed my mind about being gay. I'm now really stoked on the idea and am so glad I saw this movie. I no longer have any reservations...I want to be with a man for the rest of my life and start dating.

Anyways, you can find it online, it is really cool to see a visual depiction of a different, non-stereotypical gay romance...not to mention both guys are hot as hell. Although both actors are straight, they have a great chemistry and are really cute together. There is one scene where a guy drives home from his first gay experience and then bursts into a smile by himself in the car...I loved it.

I love that movie. There is one thing that frustrates me about it though. The main character never has to say the words, "I'm gay" ever. Every time he goes to tell someone they say I know. This is not how it happens.

Hah that's true. The other thing I hate about the movie is SPOILERALERT!!! when the sister says "They can't take kids"...what the hell, hahah, that situation would never occur.

I can't remember the last time I ever told anyone I was gay. I honestly don't think I have. Hell I never said those words to my parents, ever. At some point I was just dating men and they didn't bat an eye.

i love that movie! have in on my ipod, most gay themed movies are very sex-crazed and IMO they send the wrong impression about gay people.
However "Shelter" is amazing, i love the movie and the message. one movie i would say its a must see.

that's probably my favorite gay movie. it was good during my whole coming out experience to see (although fictional) that two guys could have a solid loving relationship together.

the acting is good, especially the sister .
i really enjoyed that movie 2 years ago when it came out.
watched it later on again and it still felt kind of fresh , so it's a keeper.

I absolutely give PROPS to that movie...it's currently my favorite movie of the moment. I own it and have been using it as "therapy" of sorts since I broke up. You would think I would ball all over the place watching something like that, but it's been helpful because it reminds me of the potential of how a good relationship can be. And the ocean surfing and scenery is just great!

If you get a chance, watch the Backlot (making of) in the Special Features section; the cast, crew, director, and executive producer talk about the various aspects of the movie and how it has many elements of the director's coming out experience as a gay surfer in CA (he also wrote the script), it added a wonderful aspect to the movie when you watch it again.

In reference to calling himself gay, the director explained how the surfing culture didn't address the "gay topic matter", so I'm guessing it was more about focusing on the experiences of the character, rather than verbally labeling himself.

Anyways, even thought it isn't an Oscar-wining movie, it does have enough elements that I can relate to.

Shelter is a definite gem in the LGBT genre. Most gay movies focus so intensely on gay stereotypes that it obscures any meaningful storyline. The story was essentially about the choices you make in life... reconciling who you are with how you will live; the sexuality of the characters was ancillary. And that is what makes the movie so good.

I'm glad it helped you out. I wish this had come out earlier in my life.

I recommend A Single Man too, although it has a sad ending - and the whole movie is generally depressing. I find Patrik 1.5 pretty good too - especially for couples who are thinking about to have children.

I saw it a few months ago, thought it was a terrific movie. Compelling story, excellent performances, extremely well-done.
