Straight guys are not supposed to care about their buddies' good looks, right?

In my gym, while everybody else is working out on their own, eventually with some spotter, the smoking hot guys aggregate with no apparent reason. I listen to what they talk about, and it's just trivial stuff they could be talking with anybody else. There are other guys who are manly and confident, and yet are not part of this beauty cluster.

I wouldn't imagine straight guys would be capable of this. Anybody with a similar experience?

Straight people can be vain and insipid just like the rest of us, thank you.

Yes, but a lesser percentage (in my observation).

in my sociology class we touched on that people naturally hang out with people who are about on the same level of attractiveness as themselves.

All my best friends are straight...they'll frequently say things like, "How did that guy get that girl, he's not even good looking"...to which I'll completely disagree in my head but won't be able to say anything. The thing is that straight guys have some idea of what makes a guy good looking, but realistically they don't get it. It's just like I have a pretty good idea of what makes a girl hot, but every now and then they'll say that some girl that I think is plain is the hottest girl ever or vice versa. Megan Fox...really? If it wasn't for all the publicity I wouldn't have even known she was supposed to be hot...

It isn't a sexualized thing. A straight guy can appreciate another guy's good looks without it being a sexual attraction.
