I think they have the right to refuse service to anyone as long as they can prove that their bakery was not a restaurant or belonged to "any other public accommodations engaged in interstate commerce". I don't think sexual orientation was included in the Civil Rights Acts though. But the way they handled it made sure that their business was the victim unless they see a spike in business from similarly-minded bigots.

    Boycott and picket.

Go to Facebook. Find "Indianapolis City Market" (where Just Cookies is located).
    "Like" the page.
Post a comment about "Just Cookies" shame.
    "Unlike" the page.

If you watch the Fox video on the link, there are two different stories. One owner says they don't make cupcakes, then she says she doesn't have enough colors. Then the husband owner says he didn't think it appropriate. Very strange story, indeed.

They certainly have the 'right' to refuse service but then again it all comes down to to society's views on the 'other' and those who are different. Yet another name on the long list of things a certain segment of American society doesn't really like or want to deal with and talk about on an adult-level.

    But yes, rainbow sprinkles? Insane!

I sure to find out if there was indeed a boycott and if their business was in any way affected after that.

The reviews sure don't seem kind.

Good on them, seems like a very good next victim of the recession monster. These morons really have no business sense whatsoever.

The have the right to refuse service, just as others have the right to speak out against the owner's statement and encourage people to take their business elsewhere.

Done! I also saw on Facebook that apparently someone representing the facility where this place resides has noticed and is planning to address it in some way.

Let a restaurant refuse service to me based on my sexual orientation and you'll see me in the news.

I sent the link from the local story to both Anderson Cooper, Rachel Maddow and CNN & MSNBC...maybe they will pick up on it if they haven't already

Once upon a time in the fair and gay city of Fort Lauderdale, a very good restaurant's owner suddenly came out publicly with "anti-gay" rhetoric despite the fact that most of their staff and clientèle was gay.

The community organized an evening "dine out" on a Saturday night.
The community flooded the restaurant and ordered the least expensive item on the appetizer menu...then they sat and enjoyed their appetizer...all night.
Check average went into the toilet.
Meals per man hour went into the toilet.
    Gross revenue was...well, "gross".

The community very generously tipped the wait staff lots and lots of cash.
The community threatened to do this again, and again until either the owner apologized or went out of business.
The owner of the restaurant relented and published a public apology.

The wrath of the public and the market can be quite fun!

The irony here is that a gay man probably invented the cupcake...and wasn't Betty Crocker a lesbian? Just sayin....icon_biggrin.gif

What happened to the days when we stuck the loud obnoxious brats in the corner and completely ignored them?

    Interesting.
And yet when a left-leaning bakery refused to serve police officers, there was no wave of outrage. Their business is booming from the publicity.

    That's just silly.

Fuck it. Let them keep their rainbow sprinkles and carbs. I'm sure people can find a much better place to eat cookies at, especially a better place that doesn't bake hate and ignorance in their product.
