A New Look at Anderson Cooper

There have been many threads, posts, comments regarding Anderson Cooper....and how he is not "out" or "out enough" or not "gay enough" etc.

Some have even suggested that Cooper needed to come out "for us" as if it was his obligation to do so.

My thoughts have always been that nobody should decide for anyone else when and if they come out. It is a personal decision...and should not be used by others to push forward their own agendas.

To me, this goes for everyone.... including celebrities, politicians, and religious leaders UNLESS there actions are unlawful or they are using their position to coerce others.

So now here are some questions....
If Anderson Cooper had come out....say 6 months ago, a year ago, 2 years ago....
Do you feel that he would have been able to be as an effective Journalist and interviewer as he has been these last couple of days of grilling Andrew Shirvell and Mike Cox?
    And...
If Cooper had made a public statement of "coming out" do you feel his interviews would have been judged by the masses as being "biased"?
    And....
Do you think he would have even had the opportunity to go after these guys and this story?

In my humble opinion, Anderson Cooper is a Journalist. I think he takes what he does seriously....and my feeling is that if he made a big deal about coming out Anderson Cooper Gay Man trumps Anderson Cooper Journalist.....

But those are my thoughts.... what are yours?

I'm confused. Anderson Cooper hasn't been out for years??? I thought he's been out forever. He doesn't say it every night, but Im pretty sure it's been a well known fact for quite awhile.

As for how he'd be perceived on the Shrivell interview if he was out, I'm still confused since he is out. I guess if he "came out" every day on the show his gay would trump his journalism.

Again, I'm confused. I wasn't aware his gayness was a secret.

    I'm confused.

Anderson is a very professional journalist and passionate about the news he gets to cover. It has nothing to do with him being in the closet (if he is still in the closet?)

He handled the interview with Mr. Shirvell like any passionate journalist and a person who will finds those views and actions disturbing would and I don't think being gay had nothing to do with it either. We had seem the same passion during the coverage of the earthquake in Haiti.

As for coming out, I don't think that's anyones decision but his and his alone. Coming out will not affect his career. He's a well-respected journalist and while his viewership might slightly dropped if he officially comes out, it won't harm his career one bit.

    Note from the Op:

Hmmmmmmm....... I am not so sure of that. I am telling you I don't think he would have been able to do this interview and taken as a "credible, unbiased" journalist if he was officially out.

As to the very first poster here.... I think the difference is that Anderson Cooper has not officially said (ala People magazine or anywhere else "YES I AM GAY") that I know of. He doesn't seem to hide anything but he certainly isnt making this a huge talking point in his life.

gay or not, he's a schill of a reporter... his "hard-hitting" reporting is - at best - unnoteworthy. I honestly don't see anything that makes him stand apart from all the other "news"-casters who simply engage in propaganda and 'entertainment'.

gay, straight, who cares? I judge reporters by substance, not sexuality.

R u serious? Cooper is one of several who do their homework before reporting.. THAT in itself is RARE!

well, I honestly don't see ANY news outlet or mainstream reporter doing their job of "informing" the public... it's all a sideshow. Mainstream news, (i.e., corporate news) is just entertainment, they simply ignore the REAL news and issues in the world, focus on sideshows and 30 second public relations promotions for government and corporate propaganda. This is the case with all mediums, although more actual information comes out in print, because so few people read, but if anyone goes to news networks for information, I see no hope in people being "informed". CNN is especially terrible, up there with Faux News, but really, they are all the same... totally irrelevant to reality.

there's a war coming? promote it!
there's an economic crisis? misrepresent it!
the government says we're in a recovery? just repeat it, don't question it.

journalism is dead, and Anderson is no exception.

    Note from the Op:

Just to be clear. I did not intend this discussion to be about whether Anderson Cooper is gay or not.....who cares.

What I am saying is....realistically who he be able to do what he does, the stories that he does....particularly gay themed stories (of which there were 3 last night ) and still be considered "unbiased"?

Some would considered biased. Smart-minded individuals will not even take his sexuality into question. It was news worth of reporting and he didn't showed taking any sizes on the Shirvell segment., he was just reporting it in the same style and passion any reporter would. Maybe is not his style to humiliate his guest like Nance Grace and Bill O'Reilly normally do.

Why would being heterosexual make him any less biased in a gay themed story?

That's like saying Judge Walker should have been removed from the Prop 8 trial for being gay, because a straight judge would have been unbiased.
