I believe that alcoholism is a disease. I guess it could be classified as a behavioral disorder. IT is simply addiction at it's finest.

It's not about the substance at all. It's about the behavior. Some people display alcoholic tendencies but don't drink at all.

    Binge drinking=Binge eating=Binge fucking
It's all the same. Is there something wrong with it? Not unless it gets out of control for the consumer.

I guess a heavy drink is on the heavy side of alcohol content.

Social drinker. . . Someone that says to their doctor they have a drink at night, but translates to a case a night or a bottle. That's my favorite

I believe binge drinking is more than like 3 drinks in one sitting or period of time, which can lead to alcoholism if repeated. However you can have a weekend bender of binge drinking but still not be an alcoholic.

Basically if you're drunk more than you're sober and/or have a habitual drinking habit you need to cut back. That's alcoholism.

Considering that they are both 37 and both are from Eau Claire WI, and both seem to have a long list of questions I would have to say it is a pretty safe bet.

The difference is the amount of alcohol.
But, alcoholism implies no alcohol, because alcoholics go to meetings.

one above poster referred to alcoholism as a disease. I have never understood that conception. Its not like you catch alcoholism from someone. Its an addiction, yes, but characterizing it as a disease seems to take the personal responsibility it involved to become an alcoholic out of the equation.

well thats the way of the modern man.... avoid personal responsibility whenever possible. I suppose there could be a genetic predisposition to becoming an alcoholic, but, everyone has a choice to take that first drink.

I prefer to refer to myself as a DRUNK rather than an ALCOHOLIC.

DRUNKS go to bars, ALCOHOLICS go to meetings.

well alcoholism is the general requirement for alcohol in order to function. If someone suffers alcoholism, they are an alcoholic and are addicted.
Binge drinking is the consumption of 5 or more alcoholic drinks in one sitting.
Heavy drinking is much the same as binge drinking, though it may be spread out over a longer period. Whereas Binge drinking tends to occur sporadically, Heavy drinking can be a regular occurance. Both are borderline Alcoholism since in most cases, the people engaging in that behaviour believe they need to drink in order to have fun.
Light drinking is much the same as social drinking. one drinks in the presence of friends but doesnt feel the need to engage in drinking outside of those situations, or in order to function or have fun. Though with light drinking one may do it alone (a beer after a hard days work or glass of wine with dinner). They do it mostly because others are doing it, and they do so in moderation most of the time.

That is how I would define it.

im not an alcoholic, i do not need alcohol to function, and its use is not conducive to playing with live electrical components, lol. However, when im not working, in the summer i am occasionally a light drinker weeknights, and a heavy drinker on weekend nights. in the winter, rum keeps my internal heater fueled in the insane cold, lol. In winter i dont drink during the week, but weekend nights i become a binge drinker. weird how the seasons change my habits, but its prolly because theres nuthing else to do in 5 ft of snow and -55. i dont drink week days in winter because work becomes very hard and im ususally too exhausted to bother drinking.

I believe alcoholism is a physiological and or chemical dependence on alcohol. You can have a genetic predisposition to it, or you can cause it to develop into and addiction to alcohol, in a similar way that cigarettes are chemically addictive to some people.
One of the classic signs of true alcohol addiction is waking up and craving a drink, again in the same way a cigarette addict craves the first cigarette in the morning.
I believe most people's issues with alcohol fall under the alcohol abuser category, which includes binge drinking. The classic sign here is someone whose drinking leads to negative consequences with work, friends, family, legal problems, or injury.
There is no real definition of heavy drinking or light drinking, but people sometimes say binge drinking is over three drinks in a sitting.
    Apparently ok if you stand.

Outside of a chemical dependence, the situation to be aware of is wether or not your drinking is creating a problem for you. If it is, then you need to correct your drinking habits or stop entirely...depending on the severity of your issues.

As I'm writing this, I'm strongly considering the distinct possibility that this was not a real question.

Anyway, that's my version of a common sense answer to the question.

The Australian National Health and Medical Research Council defines 'heavy' drinking as those frequently drinking above the daily recommendations (which I think is 4 or more standard drinks per day). Again, from memory, I think 'light' drinkers are classified as those who have around one standard drink per day. Binge drinking is usually defined as having 4 or more standard drinks in a single session of drinking. Alcoholism is just another way of saying alcohol dependence.
