I love peanut butter, but have been getting mixed information from buddies at my gym. I am trying to build muscle, but still want to stay fairly lean and still be able to have definition and see my abs. Some say that eating peanut butter is ok, but others say I need to stop eating it all together. What do you all think?

Men's Health uses peanut butter as a Powerfood as part of the Abs Diet program. From the book, "It contains monounsaturated fats that have been shown to keep you full. It's also a sinful-tasting food that can add variety and taste to a diet."

It suggests you limit your intake to 3 tablespoons per day because of the high fat content.

I eat it on whole wheat waffles for breakfast or with an apple for a snack. I also use the natural peanut butter because it only has peanuts and salt - no chemicals or sugar.

Be sure that it's the kind made from roasted peanuts only (without anything added). It's also best to have it the first half of the day to utilize/digest the fats more efficiently.

I eat peanut butter almost everyday. Skippy Natural is pretty good. Kinda wish it didn't have palm oil. But I got sick of stirring real natural peanut butter. So it's a trade off.

If you hate mixing the natural peanut butter, buy this:

    http://onlinestore.smucker.com/display_product.cfm?prod_id=385&cat_id=40

I just picked that up and it's the best invention ever. It makes absolutely NO mess and mixes the peanut butter perfectly. You only have to wash the underside of the lid when you're done. It takes 1/4 the time of mixing it by hand and does a perfect job. Well worth $10.

Give it a try and then you can eliminate the palm oil.

I quite enjoy it, however a precaution. If you are prone to migraines peanut butter will cause a massive one...and peanuts in general...it sucks....I have to severely limit my intake

I eat peanut butter everyday...have since I was a kid. regardless if its good for me in the gym or not, im eating it icon_smile.gif
when I was really little the running joke on my moms side of the family was that I ate so much PB that it gave me muscles...hence, they called me Peanut Butter Muscles, and I have the pictures of me at 5 years old flexing to prove it icon_rolleyes.gif

cant say it has any benefits for me today, because I eat straight up creamy Peter Pan...I still cant seem to get down with the natural peanut butter...not yet anyway. If theres one that tastes similar to Peter Pan (pb not the boy), let me know.

don't know what I'd do if there was no peanut butter, it's one of my mainstays. I'm particular about it.. can't eat the natural stuff,, tried, can't.... also it has to be on mushy white Wonder Bread.. anything else just isn't the same. That's the way I like it and don't give a tinkers dam what anyone else thinks.

What's all this stuff about "You should never eat....."?

Peanut butter is perfectly good food, just don't go making a pig of yourself. It does have a lot of fat, but there is other stuff in there and it can serve for everything from breakfast on whole wheat to snacks on a spoon. In order to keep to my budget, I have been trying cheaper brands without sugar when possible. None are bad tasting and at the rate I go through it, I can always switch the next time. If I can stretch for Smucker's Natural, I just stir it with a table knife at room temp and then keep it in the fridge. It spreads nicely and the oil does not separate. Besides, I get to lick the knifewhen I am finished stirring.

What is the sense of getting into good shape and having a healthy metabolism if you can't enjoy eating?

I just finished two PB&J's for lunch.

I am constantly eating peanut butter, but that's not saying much b/c I'm constantly eating. Last night, I had a pizza and some Chinese takeout for dinner, and a pint of berry sorbet for dessert.

Tonight I'm having chicken wings and pumpkin pie.

    Woohoo!

It's one of my staples. To lessen my guilt of not being able to stick to 3 tablespoons, and even to allow me a cheat treat of chomping on it with some dark chocolate chips on occassion, I buy Adams Natural Peanut butter, then pour off the top layer of heavy peanut oil and replace it with light grapeseed oil (being much better for you) in lesser quantity. I figure if I can take the time to work out my biceps and triceps at the gym, then I should be able to stir a friggin jar of peanut butter without bitching too awfully much. icon_wink.gif
