On October 20th, 2010, we will wear purple in remembrance of the 6 gay youths who committed suicide in recent weeks/months due to homophobic abuse in their homes at at their schools. Join the group and wear purple October 20th, 2010 to show your support.

I am participating in this event to remember the these young men and to show a visible sign to gay youths that there are people that do care.

150,000 people die every day...Why would I show remembrance for only 6 of them?

If anyone else feels like I do, that a visible sign to the people who are still here that you can get through this and there are others who do care, I urge you to consider participating.

Cause it's not about deaths, it's about (avoidable) suicides.

Erm, I don't mean to be douchey, but aren't, like, 99% of all suicides completely and utterly avoidable?

Besides, 88 people off themselves everyday in the U.S alone; it just seems like a moot point to pick out those 6 and forget about the other 82.

    That's all.

It's not for those 6. It's for all the living kids that will see the invisible gays that are all around them.

Because it is about bringing awareness to what's behind many of those suicides. The glbt population commits suicide at a much higher rate than heterosexuals. You have heard about six, but there are surely many more gay, lesbian, and transgendered suicides over the last few weeks that did not make the news. Most families, no matter what the circumstances, keep quiet about a suicide.

By the same argument, some people in here have made, Matthew Shepard was just another murder.

It wasn't. It was a chance to take a stand, to say 'never again'. His death has changed so much for millions of us in the US. Make no mistake, because of his death, and the national outcry because of it, gay rights and acceptance have advanced faster than the would have if people, especially his mother, said "there was nothing special about his murder'. He did not die in vain.

/oh, and I will be wearing purple.

Since you are deliberately being a prick to pick a fight about the issue, the obvious response would be "hopefully we can mourn a 7th suicide"... but I won't go there

Foxglove, it's sad that you have such a low opinion of your gay brethern. You ought to be ashamed of yourself.

He's young. The fact that he wants to make an issue of being a rebel means he may have his own reasons for wanting attention. So in support of helping young gay men who think they have a reason to commit suicide, you get pissed off and make a comment insinuating that this other young guy should kill himself. Well aren't you a brainiac. He may be wrong, but you should know better. Get your own emotions straight before you sound off on somebody else's.
