In New York City, it's almost unavoidable for people to ask you to go out for drinks. So what do you order in such situations while bearing in mind your focus on fitness?

I've heard clear liquors such as Vodka or Gin are the best. I've also been ordering cocktails with egg whites since it seems like a "healthier" option.

And no, alcohol-free beer doesn't do it for me. icon_sad.gif

Good beers (no domestic crap) in very moderate doses are healthy.

Vodka Tonic or Ceasar. Ceasar is probably healthier with the celery and all, but maybe order it without the salted rim.

    A glass of wine.

One of my favorites, especially when I don't feel like getting buzzed, is dry vermouth on the rocks with a twist of lemon.

No bartender in the know will blink an eyelash if you order soda and lime.

No such thing as a "healthy" cocktail. Alcohol, no matter its form or what you add to it will slow down your metablolism.

The thing about clear spirits being 'better' for you isn't necessarily because they are healthier, rather that they don't have the colourings that go into making dark spirits dark. Some people are sensitive to those and it gives them worse hangovers. All alcohol is "poison" to the body, so there isn't necessarily any alcohol that is better than another.

That being said, people usually drink spirits with higher calorie mixers so if you wanted to avoid that, go for wine or a low-carb beer or a "light" beer (which is low in alcohol rather than just light in colour).

How often and how much are you drinking that you need to worry about it negatively affecting your health?

A caesar is definitely one of the more healthy options. Its also really good for hangovers in the AM.

Red wines are best. They are rich in antioxidants and resorcinols. There was a study reported in the NYT in which researchers gave mice the equivalent of 70 mouse-size glasses of wine a day. The wine-connoisseur mice lived up to 50% longer than the control group of abstaining mice. Of course the mice didn't have to get up and go to work, so the experiment doesn't scale up exactly. But it suggests that there are measurable benefits.
    So drink up.

I agree with red wine. Besides that it gives you more definition in case you're in a club and take your shirt off! Years ago bodybuilders used to drink 1 or 2 glasses of red win with glycerine before they would go onstage to show better definition.

I usually drink Vodka Tonics with lime. Light, refreshing... and it gets the job done fairly quickly. icon_smile.gif

Well, a healthy alcoholic drink is a bit of an oxymoron. But if I am trying to be good, I'll order either a light beer or vodka with club soda and a splash of cranberry and a twist of lime.

Esp. if you are calorie counting, aside from not drinking at all, a vodka soda is your best bet with the lowest number of calories or sugars.

Red wine is almost definitely it.... as long as the bar has a good wine, and more and more of them are stocking good wine.

Just some soda water (yuck) with a lime or lemon twist to avoid the alcohol and just make it look like you're drinking. But I don't drink, thats what I do. But I don't go out either.

I'm usually a gin and tonic guy. The general rule should be no girly drinks, since they're usually full of sugar and extra calories.
Wine and beer in moderation are cool too.
