The problem is you bought low-end crap from a low-end retailer, not that you bought it online. I live in Bumfuck Iowa, and I buy lots of stuff online because the selection is better, and it saves me the 30-60 minute drive to where I might or might not find what I'm looking for. It can also be a lot cheaper. For example, I bought two 50" Sony LCD TVs from J&R
because their price plus shipping was hundreds of dollars less per TV than Best Buy's price plus sales tax.

. And, do read the product reviews that people post on the site; they can give you a good feel for the quality of the product.
