An intriguing and poignant contrast between the forced confessions of dissidents in Northern Ireland at the British state through torture...

... and this monstrous Op-Ed piece from the Jailor of Elsinore under the Bush administration.

    Two rotten states of Denmark.

If it really needs to be spelled out, the point is twofold: that in Hamlet, the State is Rotten from the head down; and there's a nice novel from the 70sA State Of Denmark that captures pictures Britain as an Orwellian fascist state.

The allusion is a powerful one.

    And from press secretary
Robert Gibbs"I hear these people saying he’s like George Bush. Those people ought to be drug tested,” Gibbs said. “I mean, it’s crazy.”

On civil rights issues the question is not whether or not Obama is like Bush, but to what degree he is worse.

I mean, the authorization from the president to assassinate a US citizen without benefit of trial is about as authoritarian as you can get.

Why don't you worry about Uganda instead of a gay friendly country like Denmark. There are far more hateful and oppressive nations in this world to worry about.

Hm, perhaps Obama's civil rights record should take back seat to the concern of illiteracy.
