Ok, I know this is an odd question, but I'm a doctor and feel totally comfortable inquiring. Any race I've ever done, there is always a long line of guys to the bathroom stalls. My question is, is it just nerves acting up, or have these guys actually induced it before hand with an enema or laxative? I'm just curious because it's never happened to me. Help me out fellow runners!

Maybe it's just peeing. I always have the feeling that I have to pee right before a race - and that's nerves.

Although it could definitely be a last-minute purge. I doubt anyone would use an enema or laxative though - too much risk of cramping or other, um, unintended consequences.

Indeed....I've definitely had that "constantly have to pee" feeling right before. I think you're right though....as nice as it is to have a pre-race empty colon, I'd much prefer to have it happen naturally!

i rarely feel like taking a shit before running, but i always did before bike races. Sometimes i went for it, sometimes i just kept it tightly stored , too many people lining up ... so much shit, so little time , lol.

as for peeing, well that's a classic. could it be adrenaline ?
i experiencethat before recitals too .

What a coincidence! I'm a pianist, too. I've literally felt like my bladder was going to explode.

And you're right, Briefs.....coffee always does the trick for me!

I ran cross country and track all through high school. I know a lot of people that would have to shit before a race. However, I agree that they may have to pee because of all they water they are drinking. Then again, I would never wait for a bathroom if I had to pee before a race. The world is a man's pisser!

Well, there's adrenaline thing (part of the response is peeing). As a med student, I'm sure you've studied that whole circuit.

I know guys that do an enema before hand to feel "clean" ; "light" and not have to worry about it. If that's a concern, you might do that.

that was a habit for me before i stepped on the track for any race. if i didn't shit before the first race of the day, then I would feel weighted down the whole day. So I had a ritual for every race day/week which included a regular shit time lol. Raisin Bran helps a lot haha.

I'm not a runner or swimmer, but I can imagine that nerves can be a possibility. Plus it would be nice to relieve yourself of excess "weight" so you wouldn't be weighed down. Especially to prevent the "kids rest stop" scenario.

Parents: "Go pee before we leave."
Kid: "But I don't need to."

5 minutes later in the car
Kid: "Daaaddddddyyy! I need to go potty!"

Now don't you just hate when that happens?

I have to do some sort of bathroom stop before a race after my pre-race warm-up. It gets all my muscles warmed-up and apparently my bowls relaxed enough to want to release.

I always piss right before I do any running just to empty my bladder because I can run better and faster without a bladder full of piss. icon_lol.gif

I've been sprinting for 10 years and been to International races and what not.

Some races im very nervous(shaking) and really excited
Some are small meets and not nervous at all

but 90% of my races... i either have to pee like 5 times b4 or i have the shits....

subconscious is nervous before every race for some reason or somehting

to me thats just the way it is

It's race nerves. I always get them on race day, but try to take care of business before I leave the house. icon_smile.gif

I have many, many running buds. One of the women runners in our group made the comment before a marathon that "a good poop is what you need to have a good race." So we joke with each other, "Did you have a good poop?"
